The Hannah Barberas – Dial H for Hannah Barberas

The Hannah Barberas follow up their recent compilation The Hannah Barberas Get Physical with a new EP. From listening to the girl band influenced opener It’s Not Over for the Heartache you know you are going to be onto a winner. The Sound of Happiness is an indie pop delight which, title aside, name checks Edwyn Collins which is rather ironic as the subsequent track Hideous is very Orange Juice like both musically and vocally. More C86 influenced indiepop follows in the shape of Hurry On Home which leads into the swinging dance hall rock n’ roll of Hula Hoop. … Continue reading The Hannah Barberas – Dial H for Hannah Barberas

The Wellington – It’s So Fine

Indonesian band The Wellington follow up their recent split single with The Sweetest Touch with a taster for their forthcoming debut album. It’s So Fine sees the band drop the psychedelic and baroque influences from the aforementioned split single and replacing them with a sound reminiscent of Creation Records 1989/90. Given that the latest Ride album is yet another disappointment The Wellington are a worthy replacement to fill their shoes based on this excellent dreamy, retro sounding track. Roll on that album! Soundcloud Continue reading The Wellington – It’s So Fine

The Wedding Present – Jump In, The Water’s Fine

Indiepop veterans The Wedding Present release their first new material since Spring 2017. Jump In, The Water’s Fine is a bass driven track that features acapella singing from each of the band’s three vocalists. Flip side Panama is a full on guitar indiepop song reminiscent of the bands heyday (has it ever gone away?) which also features samples of Apollo 8 astronauts talking to Mission Control, Christmas 1968. Jump In, The Water’s Fine is available now in 7″, 10″ and digital formats via Come Play With Me and features artwork by Hefner’s Darren Hayman. Reflector (Madrid) – Canciones Para Un Ferragosto

One man band Reflector have been making music since 2002 (take a glance at that back catalogue) and I stumbled on them (him?) by chance during a bandcamp search. Being a fan of Blade Runner the title of the song El día que murió Rutger Hauer stood out for me. Like the others on this EP the song, The Day Rutger Hauer Died when translated, is catchy lo-fi guitar driven indiepop that musically pays homage to days gone by. The songs are tuneful and the voice is the catchiest deadpan vocal I have heard for a long time. As the … Continue reading Reflector (Madrid) – Canciones Para Un Ferragosto

Auto-Vélo – Copernica EP

Auto-Vélo is the new project from Graeme Elston who has previously been in bands such as Love Parade, Astronaut, Eva Luna as well recording under his own name and being a renowned sound engineer. The Copernica EP is the debut release under the new monikor and features four indie/synth pop songs which showcases Elston’s versatility. The title track opens proceedings and features jerky guitars with backing beats provided by the synth alongside side excellent main and backing vocals. It grabs the listener almost immediately and is a damn fine pop song! Auto-Vélo MTRK could easily be explained as a long … Continue reading Auto-Vélo – Copernica EP

Something For The Weekend? Three From Today’s Inbox

This weeks pack of three features three bands whose latest tracks turned up in today’s very busy Bandcamp inbox…. Egoism – What Are We Doing? Australians Egoism make catchy indiepop/dreampop tunes and What Are We Doing? is no exception. Featuring addictive vocals and a hook laden melody, it’s their best song to date to these ears. Facebook Newmoon – Collide Into Me I have not heard Belgian band Newmoon, who have been around for a few years now, before. That’s a shame as Collide Into Me is a lovely, gentle dreampop song, despite the maudlin words, that tugs at ones … Continue reading Something For The Weekend? Three From Today’s Inbox

Mitimitis – Abrilar

I first discovered Chilean band Mitimitis via the Goodbye Idiots II compilation that was put out on Stupid Decisions at the end of last year. After a couple of compilation appearances they released the Abrilar EP via Gemelo Parásito Records at the beginning of last month and it features four feeling lo-fi indiepop tracks. The EP opens with the instrumental and wittily named Pijamas Harvey before heading on to the twee/c86 inspired Ella Flotó Sobre Mi Y Voló Un Auto Con Su Rayo Laser. 7up is a laid back affair as is the tuneful and melodic Esteban Maravilla with it’s … Continue reading Mitimitis – Abrilar

The Color Waves – The Bay / Paper Tiger

Hazy, soothing and ethereal are just a few of the words previously used to describe The Color Waves music. Previously a two piece featuring two ex-members of All My Friends it now sounds like, and I could be mistaken here, that the band are now just down to Garry Flockhart Hoggan. Not that it makes a difference because they are still producing yearning, dreamy and mellow music that you can just drift off to, letting your imagination do the rest. That’s two more tracks for my imaginary ambient chill-out playlist taken care of then! Facebook Continue reading The Color Waves – The Bay / Paper Tiger

Royal Landscaping Society – Clean

Spanish indiepop veterans Royal Landscaping Society are back with a new single and the second for their new label, Matinee Recordings. Clean is a sparkling synthpop/indiepop hybrid and is backed with band’s cover of The Softies I Love You More. Clean is being released digitally via Matinee Recordings later this week. An album, titled Means of Production, follows later this summer. Facebook Continue reading Royal Landscaping Society – Clean
