The Belafontes – Big Man

Just as the sun finally disappears from London Town in 2019 this is exactly what I need from down under via the band who just love summer, sunshine, parties and erm, some more. Big Man is a surf pop/rock inspired track complete with fuzzy and distorted guitars. The breezy garage inspired vocals are a hit too as the singer wants to be on the beach, with the sun on her back, instead being trapped by a self-appointed bore. The Belafontes never fail to entertain and on Big Man that’s no exception. Facebook Continue reading The Belafontes – Big Man

Grrrl Gang – Dream Grrrl

London based label Damnably have released Dream Girl by Indonesian indiepop band, and new signings to the label, Grrrl Gang. It’s a rerecorded version of the single they released last year via Kolibri Rekords and if you think the song could not sound better you would be wrong. It’s a precursor a compilation of the band Damnably will be releasing in the future which will be the band’s first ever appearance on vinyl. Dream on! Something For The Weekend? Three Albums

This weeks pack of three consists of three albums on my shopping list. Últim Cavall – Alaska This one has me hooked straight from the off. Literally straight from the opening bars of first track Els llacs which blends seamlessly into Incendi and then into current favourite Tornar A Casa it’s a dreamy journey throughout. It’s a case of not looking back and before you know it you reach the gentle vibes of the closing track Totes Les Flors. Alaska is an indiepop/dreampop album you can fully immerse yourself in and just let go. Divine. Alaska is available on vinyl … Continue reading Something For The Weekend? Three Albums

Soumbalgwang – Gwangan Surf

The new single from Busan’s Soumbalgwang clocks in at just over a minute. Like their city mates Say Sue Me, Soumbalgwang like mixing up their music with rock and roll influences and the title of this one gives it away. Gwangan Surf is very catchy from the off – the jangling guitars and punchy vocals see to that and given this singles length they have to be. I am not sure it’s their Velocity Girl moment just yet but it’s a start. Facebook Continue reading Soumbalgwang – Gwangan Surf

Grrl Cloud – Winding Streets/Voicemail

Originally released for Cassette Store Day Philippines 2019 Winding Streets/Voicemail by Manila based Grrl Cloud has a recent digital release courtesy of Genjitsu Stargazing Society who are also the label behind the aforementioned event. Winding Streets is twee pop at it’s finest echoing to the early 1990s indiepop sounds of labels such as Woosh or Sunday Records whilst Voicemail is an acoustic song that is both delicate and wistful. I have not heard much from the artist or label but some digital crate digging may well be in order. Facebook Continue reading Grrl Cloud – Winding Streets/Voicemail

Well Whale – Pipe Dream

Indonesian band Well Whale return with a new single, following up their debut single She’s A Punk. To be honest the progress between the two singles is astounding. Reminding me of acts on Creation Records the band present a more developed sound with some excellent jangling guitars whilst the vocals sound fuller, being more rounded. And plenty of la, la, la, la’s too…. A cracking track regardless of how you look (hear?) it! Instagram Continue reading Well Whale – Pipe Dream

Salt Lake Alley – But You Do, You Do

Swedish band Salt Lake Valley who are comprised of Gustav Tranback (Paper Hearts, Dismal Plight) and Mikael Carlsson (The Honeydrips, Dorotea) will be following up last years Deals at the Crossroads EP (Cloudberry Records) with their debut album The Way It Feels. But You Do, You Do is the first single to be taken from the album and it’s a frantic and catchy indiepop song that bodes well for the rest of the album. Give it a whirl… Continue reading Salt Lake Alley – But You Do, You Do

Full Power Happy Hour – The Fun EP

The wonderfully named Full Power Happy Hour are a new band comprised of veterans of the Brisbane music scene. After forming last year The Fun EP is the band’s debut release. Opening with the folky Complicit, which reminds me of the music Scotland’s Hermit Crabs used to make, the EP moves onto a more jangling direction. The folk influences can still heard throughout the remainder of the EP thanks to the melody and vocals. Fun sounds just like it’s title suggests whilst the final track Endless Summer, which is my pick of the bunch, is about Brisbane’s humid weather which … Continue reading Full Power Happy Hour – The Fun EP
