Golden Teardrops – Two Singles

The Golden Teardrops have made available two singles from their forthcoming debut album Promises & Smiles that will be released via Emma’s House Records later this month. Both singles mix 1960’s influences such as baroque pop and surf music with 1980’s indiepop and it’s a very good mix indeed as evidenced here. It’s the sound of summer and I already have my portable speakers alongside the bucket and spade at the ready! You can pre-order the album from here. Sea Pinks – Run & Run

Run & Run is an ode to the joys of spring but I think Belfast’s Sea Pinks have jumped the gun some what early as it’s pissing down and freezing cold in London Town as I write this! That said Run & Run is a pretty decent indiepop tune that has seen me press repeat on more than one occasion. And, thanks to the trumpet, it reminds me of The June Brides. Hang on? Is that the spring sun trying to break through? No….. *Presses play once more* Get it digitally from here. Facebook Continue reading Sea Pinks – Run & Run

The Catherines – Sorry, But Your Suicide Note Is Really Funny

I haven’t really got The Catherines or their appeal. Their music, artwork, song titles and lyrics all seem straight out of the C86/indiepop template recipe book. Don’t get me wrong they can make a good tune but it just seems to be the same one churned out time and time again. It all just seems to be too cliched for my liking. That said, and to create a balance, Sorry, But Your Suicide Note Is Really Funny is a catchy song and maybe it’s the addition of strong female vocals that gives it some spark which generates interest to these … Continue reading The Catherines – Sorry, But Your Suicide Note Is Really Funny

Tinsel Heart – Mona’s Eyes/American Friend

Could this be the long awaited 7″ release on Matinee? I certainly hope so as we have been waiting for Malmo’s Tinsel Hearts to deliver a debut single for some time now. It sounds like they had gone down The Redskins route at the beginning of Mona’s Eyes as it gets a starts off like Lean On Me. Whilst not as funky it is still as dancey. American Friend sees the band returning back to familiar 1980’s jangling indie guitar territory. Tinsel Heart have given us two contrasting songs but more importantly, two very good songs indeed. Now is it … Continue reading Tinsel Heart – Mona’s Eyes/American Friend

Lost and Found – A Records I Like Playlist (April 2018 #1)

Unfortunately the past ten days have seen me laid low by a viral infection hence the lack of posts. I have updated the playlist I had ready to go two weeks ago so it’s a bit of a bumper crop. Thankfully these tracks are more pleasant in their infectiousness than what I have been suffering with. Enjoy! Click on the image to start the playlist. More playlists can be found here and the Playmoss page is here. Continue reading Lost and Found – A Records I Like Playlist (April 2018 #1)

Your Favourite Colour – April ’18

Your Favourite Colour is a brand new solo project from Ben who was (or still is?) in The Lodger. These two completed demos are melodic keyboard dominated tracks and his distinctive tones hark back to the indiepop brilliance of the aforementioned band. I knew it was him before making sure on t’ net! The lyrics and vocals on Former Life are very catchy indeed. It could (should) easily become a single on The Lodger’s former label Elefant. Lovely stuff and let’s hope there is more to come. Facebook Continue reading Your Favourite Colour – April ’18

Ping Pong Club – Venetian Blinds

Bandung’s Ping Pong Club deliver a fine slice of indiepop in the shape of Venetian Blinds. It’s enhanced by some excellent vocals and even better synths which gives it some distinction when compared against similar tracks in my bandcamp feed. There is also a remix courtesy of The Countless Kisses which gives us some lovely noises but ultimately isn’t a patch on the original. Available digitally from here. На гребне волны – Легко

This Russian band’s name in English, as google translate assures me, is At The Crest Of The Wave and I guess the artwork confirms that! What we have here are four excellent 1960’s influenced twee/indiepop tracks woven with some fine rock and roll guitar in the style of Duanne Eddy – yes it works! And the singer’s voice is beautiful none more so than on Вода (Water). I was going to compare them to say The Yearning but they are already distinct enough to not warrant that. Give them a listen. Download for nowt from here. VK.Com Continue reading На гребне волны – Легко

Aurora Lights – A Records I Like Playlist (March 2018 #2)

There has been plenty of good “tuneage” this month. Certainly enough to warrant a second playmoss mix for your listening pleasure. There are a number I have written about previously but there are also a number I have yet to mention so give those a listen as a bare minimum. These include tracks by The Angel Makers, Seeing Hands, The Catherines, Lasitud and Klass II amongst others. As ever click on the image to start. Enjoy! More playlists can be found here and the Playmoss page is here. Continue reading Aurora Lights – A Records I Like Playlist (March 2018 #2)

Night Flowers – Hey Love

Hey Love is the third single to be lifted from the forthcoming album Wild Notion. It has 1960’s girl band vocals blended with alt rock guitars and if The Concretes were shoegaze orientated they may have well sounded like this. The two b-sides are not bad either. The previously unreleased You Don’t Tell Me sounds like a Twisterella outtake whilst the band’s cover of Jane Wiedlin’s Rush Hour sounds as poppy as the original. Hey Love was available as a limited edition cassette but it’s now sold out but you can still get it digitally from here. Facebook Continue reading Night Flowers – Hey Love
