Ping Pong Club – Venetian Blinds

Bandung’s Ping Pong Club deliver a fine slice of indiepop in the shape of Venetian Blinds. It’s enhanced by some excellent vocals and even better synths which gives it some distinction when compared against similar tracks in my bandcamp feed. There is also a remix courtesy of The Countless Kisses which gives us some lovely noises but ultimately isn’t a patch on the original. Available digitally from here. This Russian band’s name in English, as google translate assures me, is At The Crest Of The Wave and I guess the artwork confirms that! What we have here are four excellent 1960’s influenced twee/indiepop tracks woven with some fine rock and roll guitar in the style of Duanne Eddy – yes it works! And the singer’s voice is beautiful none more so than on Вода (Water). I was going to compare them to say The Yearning but they are already distinct enough to not warrant that. Give them a listen. Night Flowers – Hey Love

Hey Love is the third single to be lifted from the forthcoming album Wild Notion. It has 1960’s girl band vocals blended with alt rock guitars and if The Concretes were shoegaze orientated they may have well sounded like this. The two b-sides are not bad either. The previously unreleased You Don’t Tell Me sounds like a Twisterella outtake whilst the band’s cover of Jane Wiedlin’s Rush Hour sounds as poppy as the original. The Groove Farm – Back Of My Mind

The Groove Farm are back! Back of My Mind is taken from the forthcoming Groovy Pharmacy album. It’s split between the bands recent Dandelion Radio Session on one side with brand new studio recordings on the other. The band always erred on the frantic, psychedelic side of indiepop and Back of My Mind is thankfully no exception! Good to have (hear?) them back. Tiny Fireflies – Nothing / 2040

I have had a bit of a love/hate relationship with Tiny Fireflies over the years. Sometimes they just deliver tracks that are way too twee and sugary sweet. You know where you have to put your head between your shoulders, shudder and wait for your teeth to fall out. Then on the other hand they deliver the perfect pop record. NAH… – Summer’s Failing

Summer’s Failing, by the wonderfully named NAH…, is the lead track taken from the EP of the same name. It’s the first release for this Dutch outfit and it’s all jangling guitars and boy/girl vocals at the ready. It’s not to difficult to think about flowery, sometimes twee, indiepop despite the snow falling once more in London Town. It’s a case of spring failing yet alone summer but this excellent track will get me thru it. Summer’s Failing is available to pre-order in digital and CD formats from the band. Soft Science – Undone/I Don’t Know Why I Love You

Soft Science release a double a sided single next month. Undone is a shimmering dreampop track that can leave an unwary listener somewhat spellbound whilst the AA side features the band’s cover of The House of Love’s 1989 major label debut single I Don’t Know Why I Love You. I always thought it was a song that would suit a female vocals and what do ya know. The mesmerising guitars ain’t bad either.
