The debut album from the Texas based Paper Jam, sound wise at least, is a trip down memory lane because of the retro tinged sounds that permanate throughout the ten tracks found on This And That.
Opener Polka Dot Girl sounds like Taullah Gosh whilst the title track sounds like a Pink Hearts Yellow Moons era Dressy Bessy. Other songs hint at the likes of The Rosehips and The Flatmates whilst I also hear elements of The Frenchmen too. The songs veer from the laid-back to the jangling but it’s on the faster tracks such as Skyscraper and Lovely Girl where they excel. Is that a flute or recorder on the latter? The backing vocals work really well too especially on the likes of Tattle Tail.
It’s all over in 20 and a bit minutes and ending with Everybody with it’s range of varied sounds including barking, miaowing and a car horn or two. If you like any of the bands mentioned and/or the current Indonesian indiepop scene then this is an absolute must. For anyone else one spin should have you grinning. And hooked!
