The Sunday Ambient Saunter

It’s not all indiepop, dreampop, jangle pop, noise pop and post-punk on the RIL stereo as some posts may suggest. I give techno the occasional mention, but what area of music I am getting back to of late into is Ambient. Recently, after listening to music that fused drone alongside ambient and Not Unloved’s recent Ambient/Minimal Mix, I sought out some tracks to play mainly as a late night sleeping companion.

37735i6 – Etherizing/Cryonics

For anyone who thinks Ambient means 30-minute tracks of length, Nebraska’s 37735i6 may surprise you. Giselle, the individual behind the moniker, has released two singles so far this year. The latest on, titled Etherizing, is a short but powerful ethereal ambient track, whilst February’s Cryonics bridges the gap between folk and ambient. I particularly like the guitar on the latter, whilst both have a haunting, alien landscape, feel.

Households Better Sleep – My Heart Will Always Betray Me

Moscow’s wonderfully named Households Better Sleep released their latest EP last month. There are three tracks here that result in a droning, repetitive and looping EP (I am not using those words negatively!) that has some beautiful sounds dispersed throughout. The middle and longest track Holding Tight stands out for me.

Architect of Echoes – The Sentient

I am not the world’s best writer, and more than often I struggle with trying to describe the music I like. Trying to describe Ambient is even harder, and my first attempt here came across as an entry for Private Eye’s Pseuds Corner. So I will leave it to the artist.

“A lengthy musical interpretation of the creation of The Sentient. Made from the dust of the cosmos and brought to life through the release of quantum energies and super-charged particles emitted by a myriad of exploding supernovae.”

In short, it’s a beautiful and expansive sounding track.

An equally impressive album titled Circulushas been released this the single came out. It’s out now via Kahvi Collective.

Firecloud – Exclusion Zone

New Mexico’s Firecloud had two releases last month. One was the Nostalgia for Lost Time album, which I have thoroughly enjoyed, Despite three tracks it’s a lengthy listen so for the purpose of this post I will present the 23-minute piece Exclusion Zone for your listening pleasure. Recorded at the same time as the aforementioned album, the artist felt that it did not fit the mood and release it separately. It’s a piece that sounds quite desolate, and imagery of sweeping sands in an abandoned enclosure sprang to my mind. The mind may play tricks, and you may see a flickering light in the distance. But did you in this abandoned place?
