What Others Are Saying #3

So a bit of a special feature this one, as this post covers three dark ambient releases I have purchased from the Cryo Chamber these past few months. I think ambient is a genre I struggle to describe, despite my efforts here previously. I have really enjoyed the output from this label, and these three releases in particular. Reading through the reviews below, you will soon discover a common theme linking these albums, which is a huge part of the reason why I choose to listen to them.

Various Artists – Mercury Mission Diaries

“The release of Mercury Mission Diaries was something of a surprise to me – not the usual dark and brooding various artist compilations that Cryo Chamber had released in the past, but a more science-fiction/space horror themed one. And to my even greater pleasure, it’s bloody good. It’s very much like a soundtrack to a great, deep cinematic sci-fi film that doesn’t exist.”

“If you like your ambient music dark, widescreen cinematic, and sci-fi as possible, this Cryo Chamber release is the place to go. It is a various artist compilation, but one that sounds like a coherent movie soundtrack. “

Void Stasis – Viral Incubation

“Despite the title, this album from Kristof Bathory, Scott Denman, and Marie Ann Hedonia is not directly related to COVID-19. Instead, it is a classic sci-fi / horror dark ambient mix – or at least that is what it might sound like on first listen. But like the proverbial Russian doll, Viral Incubation has detail nested inside of detail. “

“The story is macabre and mysterious, and the music is an excellent set piece of grim, cosmic ambience; this follow-up sees the group really showing their skills with cinematic soundscapes as the more focused narrative gives the music more focus, and with the sci fi horror inspirations worn on its sleeve, fans of both this style of music and film will find something to love about this album”

Alphaxone & Dronny Darko – Beyond the Event Horizon

“Beyond the Event Horizon delivers haunting yet majestic tones with a requisite level of disquiet. While exhibiting a clear sci-fi / horror angle the music paints with a broader brush, incorporating sounds of dripping liquid as well as an organic approach. “
