The Bandcamp Friday Sampler

Well I certainly had a lot of emails to sift through this Bandcamp Friday. So much so, it was time to resurrect the unpopular sampler feature! Here are some of the tracks purchased today.

Here is the Playlist:

or listen on YouTube.

Terraplana – Conversas

The Brazilian shoegazers are back with their first new single since July 2021. Conversas is a blast of melodic and sometimes noisy shoegaze.

Cable Ties – Perfect Client

Talking about noisy Australian garage-punks Cable Ties are back in the shape of new single Perfect Client. It’s a blast of punk infused, new wave style powerpop resplendent with powerful guitars and shouty vocals. It’s out now on Merge Records (US) and Poison City Records (AUS) so support your local label.

Meeve – Mist

Mist is the debut single from the Indonesian shoegazers Meeve. An enjoyable Ride (pun intended) through retro sounding shoegazing territory.

Roller Derby – Always on My Mind

No, it’s not a cover of the song made popular by Elvis Presley from Hamburg’s Roller Derby. Instead, the new single is a delightful indiepop tune that should warm the cockles of the heart of every indiepop fan out there. Some nice 80s tinges throughout, too.

Ducks Ltd. (feat. Mo Troper, Ratboys) – Invitation

Now this one is a cover with Ducks Ltd. and friends covering The Feelies track. Not much to distinguish them to be honest, but it sounds fun.

Salt Lake Alley – Guess I’ll Never Know

Stockholm’s Salt Lake Alley jangle their way down the jangle pop highway. Not sure if I mentioned it, but it’s very jangly. And, erm, very good with it too! Guess I’ll Never Know is out now via Shelflife Records.

Letting Up Despite Great Faults – Halfway Crooks

Letting Up Despite Great Faults release their new EP titled Crumble in early April. The EP’s closing track Halfway Crooks is the taster for the EP, and it sounds like a mix of New Order, MBV and noise pop in general. Fuzzy, loud and good! The Crumble EP can be pre-ordered from here.

Grey Gallows – Dying Light

Greek post-punk band Grey Gallows return with a fine single in the form of Dying Light. Thriving beats coupled with goth tinged vocals make this one for a cold wave party or five! The track is taken from the forthcoming album Strangers which is due to for release this coming spring.

Desmond Doom – Disease

Given the track’s cover art, it should come as no surprise that Disease opens like a cover of Joy Division’s Disorder. I was thinking it was all a bit tongue in cheek, especially given lyrics such as “can’t take my spirit, I ain’t kneeling, I won’t succumb to fear”. Of course, if you have never heard Joy Division, then this track is a pretty decent post-punk tune. If you have heard them and once you stop shaking your head or laughing, then this track is a pretty decent post-punk tune too!

Girl Ray – Everybody’s Saying That

After two gloomy tracks, there is only one thing that we can follow those with, isn’t there? Yeah! That’s right. A bit of disco courtesy of London’s Girl Ray. The band’s singer/guitarist Poppy Hankin writes that

“The lyrics on this single were inspired by the straight-to-the-heart simplicity of the disco greats. I wrote it while missing my partner while on tour in 2020, and it plays on themes of new love and self-doubt. Musically we took reference from the nu-disco resurgence that seemed to be taking off in 2020, in particular from the likes of Kylie Minogue (Disco), Jessie Ware (What’s Your Pleasure?), Dua Lipa (Future Nostalgia) and Róisín Murphy (Róisín Machine). We were really inspired by all of these women re-imagining disco.”

Great stuff and a cert for a remix!
