Deary – Fairground

London based Deary emerged last year with their Fairground Demo EP which I compared to Trip-Hop meeting 4AD or The Cure meeting Electronica. Since then, the band have been signed by the London shoegazing label Sonic Cathedral and the aforementioned EP’s title track has been re-recorded and released as the band’s debut single.

The track opens and then stays with trip-hop and big beat, erm, beats whilst singer/guitarist Dottie’s ethereal vocals swirl continuously around. When the vocals fade to the background, the sound is reminiscent of the Cocteau Twins. If you are a fan of Massive Attack’s remixes, Portishead or Tricky combining with Garbage, then this track is for you. Don’t forget those 4AD influences, either!

Fairground is out now on Sonic Cathedral.
