Toronto’s Tough Age are using that “riff” I have heard in so many indiepop songs of late on new song Giuseppe Pizzeria. It’s one I have heard the likes of Pastel Coast and Morning Arcade, to name just a couple, have previously used.
I cannot be sure where I first heard them but my memory suggests that they are based on Blondie’s guitar chords. That’s not a bad template to be fair and Tough Age use it to great effect here as the jangling guitars speed up further and further into the song. The words that suggest a change of career and lifestyle to present a healthy balanced mind are entwined marvellously. However, it’s the riffs and melodies that get me hooked, leaving me wanting another slice after slice.
Giuseppe Pizzeria is found on a split release with labelmates Dumb titled Pizza Punks. It’s being released by Mint Records on limited edition melted Mozza vinyl as well as the customary digital formats. It’s out on Jul;y 9th 2021 and can be pre-ordered here.
