Witterings from an old indie kid

Seeing Off 2019

I intended to post a bit more last month but a long Christmas break with a very poor internet connection put paid to that so today’s post rounds up some of the outstanding releases that I wanted to mention remaining on my list.

Será Más Fácil/La Inseguridad is the third and final chapter of Spanish band Linda Guilala’s international trilogy. Following releases on UK label Sonic Cathedral and the German label Dreams Never End the last release came out in US label Test Pattern Records during the middle of last month and mixes a range of styles to great effect.

Glenn Donaldson’s DIY kitchen pop project The Reds, Pinks & Purples had a prolific 2019 in which the demo releases of the past year or so were realised in the shape of Septembers Anxiety Art long player. That has not stopped them as December saw two more releases in the form of I Should Have Helped You and The Record Player & the Damage Done.

Seasurfer followed up October’s Blue Days with Lovers Breakdown. The original version is great but the 4AD inspired remix on the flip is even better. It’s out now on Reptile Music. Japan based Letters To Annika, which is the project of For Tracy Hyde/April Blue member Azusa Suga, released their debut single in the form of Namesake and it’s a very good track indeed.

Kiwi based Dead Little Penny released their debut album Urge Surfing back in November and it’s full of noisy pop nuggets. French indiepop outfit released their debut album Hovercraft and the expectation given on their Vacation single was realised on tracks like Kerry and Aquarius.

Italian post-punk outfit Elicriso followed up their Sinapsi single with a fully fledged EP titled Illusioni Distorte. It’s features five coldwave/darkwave/synthpop tracks including the aforementioned single and the instrumental title track is my pick of the bunch here.

Finally, and as we head into the new year, Estonian dream pop band Pia Fraus have previewed a third single from their forthcoming Empty Parks album. Titled Love Sports it will surely be backed with a range of remixes, as per the previous two singles, when it’s released on the 20th January.
