This week’s pack of three feature selections from the recent Records I Like playlist that you should listen to further.
Vim – Down
Down is a dreamy ethereal track which has been released as a taster to the full EP Ukiyo that is due out in December. If Down is the taster then I cannot wait until the full banquet that EP promises to bring. Hurry up – I am getting hungry!
Weed Hounds – Double Life
Fuzzy noisy and tuneful pop of the highest order can be found on New York’s Weed Hounds first release for three years. It’s a relentless onslaught over the course of the EP’s five songs, only one of which passes the three minute mark. If Belly went through a Swervedriver phase they may have well sounded like this. As our American friends say “it’s awesome”….
Available on cassette (it’s crying out for a vinyl release) or digital formats from here.
Verandan – Verandan EP
Verandan were formed by Ville Hopponen whose previous bands include the likes of Cats on Fire and Le Futur Pompiste. He is joined on his latest project by Aleksi Peltonen (Puunhalaaja) Aki Pohjankyrö (Black Twig, LOVE SPORT), Kaarlo Stauffer (Black Twig) and Sampo Seppänen (Sofa Pets, Kynnet).
The EP is a clever mix of indiepop, eighties pop, twee and glam with the songs reminding me of diverse acts such as The Associates, The Smiths, ABC and Orange Juice in their later, but not lean , period (I will get me coat) amongst others. It’s certainly one of the more unique releases I have heard this past month and the strength of all the songs is immense.
Available digitally from here.
