Unlikely Friends (or is it simply UF?) consist of Charles Bert (Math & Physics Club) , Dee Krain (BOAT) and Chris Mac from, as the bandcamp page states, too many projects to list. (I’ve Got a) Soft Reputation is the first single taken from the band’s forthcoming debut album Solid Gold Cowboys which is due for release in January next year. Thanks mainly to the vocals this reminds of Sugar especially around the Copper Blue album. And that means a big like in anyone’s book methinks. I have finally got around to listening to the new album from The Popguns and like the recent single Lovejunky (included here) there are no real surprises here in comparison to their previous ouput – their last album A Plus de Cent came out in 1996. However when that is all done & said it’s a thoroughly enjoyable listen and isn’t that what it is all about? The aforementioned single is a highlight as is Still Waiting For The Winter which harks back to a certain single from 1989. Only on Not Your Night Tonight does that pace take a … Continue reading The Popguns – Pop Fiction
The New Romantics were originally called Shy Boys and they released an excellent single under that moniker in the form of Julia last year (which is still available under the new name). Both sides of this new release are delving deep into dream pop territory especially on Something which simply soars and uses girl/boy vocals to great effect. I am gonna press play again……. Out now on Dracula Horse. Get it from here. Continue reading The New Romantics – Drifting/Something
Oddbox Records have released a pay as much as you want compilation highlighting their releases this past year. It features tracks from the likes of The Wolfhounds, The Wendy Darlings, Tyrannosaurus Dead and more. The label will open 2015 with the release of the new album from the reformed Manhattan Love Suicides which is a joint release with Squirrel Records. Happy new year indeed! You can get it here. It’s available until the end of January 2015. Homepage Continue reading Various – Oddbox 2014
As some of you may have gathered from this blog I prefer the fuzzier side of indiepop. Definitely no flippin’ ukuleles for me and cut down on the glockenspiels too (although I admit some bands do use those to good effect). So this cassette compilation from Stoke On Trent’s Very Gun Records is right up my street. Fuzz Pop features twenty noisy & fuzzy tunes from a variety of bands most of whom I have not heard before. It’s early days on the listening front but I am already drawn to tracks by Gurr, Love Cuts and Expert Alterations. As … Continue reading Various Artists – Fuzz Pop
Back in September I mentioned My Light Shines For You and their track Little Little which was taken from an EP titled días de lluvia. Back then I was unsure where you could buy it but now the full EP has just been released in digital formats. I thought Little Little was a fine example of C86 inspired pop and I am happy to say the whole EP carries on in pretty much the same vein especially on Green Bicycle Girl. I really like this EP especially the female vocals throughout which reminds me in part of Amelia Fletcher. You … Continue reading My Light Shines For You – días de lluvia EP
Nottinghams’ Lost Pets only formed back in May of this year and have already won plaudits for their live shows on the likes of Anorak. They have posted three songs on Bandcamp and Get Out is far and away my favourite being both thoughtful and wistful. There is something lovely and melancholic about Lost Pets and I hope to see them soon. Until then………… Homepage Facebook Continue reading Lost Pets – Get Out
Tyrannosaurus Dead recently released their debut long player Flying Ant Day on Oddbox Records. It features ten tracks including the single Post Holiday Dead Song as well as personal fave Local Bullies. Fuzzy guitars provide a backing to vocals that merge and blur with lyrics dealing with desperation and frustration. What’s not too like? Get it here in various formats. Facebook Continue reading Tyrannosaurus Dead – Flying Ant Day
Currently no one does fuzzy indie pop better than Madrid’s Zipper in my view and their brand new single The Worst Day Of The Week isn’t going to see them relinquish that particular crown just yet. Pure pop from a great band on a great label…………. It’s out now on limited edition 7″ single via Dufflecoat Records. Get it (but save me a copy as I don’t get paid until next week!)
