Soma Cake – The Longest Hug

I missed the latest EP from Reynosa’s Soma Cake when it came out last month but now it’s got a release on Stupid Decisions, that excellent label which promotes music from the band’s home country Mexico as well as Central and South America. It’s the follow up to 2018’s Girls Bite Harder album and the band continue down the road to melancholy. Fusing dreampop, post-punk and shoegaze the guitars are ably supported by the drum machine/sequencer whilst the songs tell stories full of gloom and woe. Lyrics such as “I couldn’t be happier to die by your kiss”, “feeling empty … Continue reading Soma Cake – The Longest Hug

Closer Preys – Betrayed EP

The Betrayed EP is the debut release from 19 year old Seoul based (and self confessed music nerd) Minjun Kang aka Closer Preys. Musically this DIY bedroom project moves between dream, indie and twee pop. There are some interesting ideas and noises here none more so on Distant Friends with it’s hushed vocals and chiming guitar sound. The wonderfully named I Tried To Swim Across The Ocean picks up the pace adding some noise and layers to the aforementioned guitars whilst Dark Room has that echoing, DIY bedroom pop sound. Promising! Continue reading Closer Preys – Betrayed EP

Something For The Weekend? – Three Post-Punk/Synth Pop Acts

This weeks pack of three features three recent post-punk releases that are inspired by synth-pop. Handful of Snowdrops – The Four Winds Canadian post-punk veterans Handful of Snowdrops return with their first new material since 2018’s excellent Noir album. The Four Winds errs on the side of poppier side of synth-pop whilst Tail Sails is a moody, atmospheric instrumental track. However it’s the scattered edit of the title track that stands out taking the original version to a higher level or should that be dancefloor? Facebook Холодный звонок – Друг Moscow based one man post-punk act Холодный звонок (Cold Call) … Continue reading Something For The Weekend? – Three Post-Punk/Synth Pop Acts

Five Card Shuffle

A round up of sorts! Jetstream Pony have recently released a new track in the shape of Yellow Pills. Not sure the of the history of this one aside that it was recorded last Autumn but it’s a fine fuzzy pop song none the less. Crank it up. London label Damnably are releasing a compilation of Grrrl Gang’s work to date on vinyl and the solid lilac edition looks very nice indeed. Called Here To Stay it features nine tracks including two versions of the everlasting fave Dream Grrrl. Pre-order it from here. The Memory Fades posted a new demo … Continue reading Five Card Shuffle

Big Baby – String Of Pearls

Big Baby follow up 2017’s Sour Patch EP with a new EP entitled Fizzy Cola which is due for release later this week. Fuzzy Cola may have been a more appropriate name because taster track String Of Pearls is full of edgy, noisy guitar whilst the voice of Ali Mislowsky draws the listener in even further. Fizzy Cola will be released on cassette via French label Hidden Bay Records and the EP is also available digitally from the band. A CD release on Jigsaw Records is also in the offering. Death Of Heather – In Me

Bangkok based Death Of Heather are releasing their debut album later this year and have just released the third single to be lifted from it. In Me is, like their previous efforts, full of shimmering guitars and hushed vocals. That doesn’t suggest a band with a lack of ideas but instead one who are honing their craft especially when it comes to the lengthy but dreamy guitar outro that I could listen too on a continuous loop. Facebook Continue reading Death Of Heather – In Me

Dummy – Angel’s Gear

Dummy hail from Los Angeles and Angel’s Gear is their first track. And it’s not a bad one to start with as it blends 1960’s psychedelia and pop. The vintage moog sound that runs throughout the song also gives it a Krautrock “feel” making not only one to nod your head too but also one for the dance-floor. Given the track listing on the artwork it’s safe to say a fully fledged EP will be coming along soon and based on Angel’s Gear I cannot wait to listen to some more. Nah… – Perfect Game

Nah… the joint Dutch/German indiepop band have released a new single and boy, do they start the new year in some style. Taking their cues from the Glasgow School Perfect Game, a song about love and darts, features jangling guitars in the style of postcard records whilst the vocals err on the side of Edwyn Collins. It features lovely cover art too featuring 1970’s icon Sally Thomsett. 180! Facebook Continue reading Nah… – Perfect Game

Your Friends Polymers – Like A Rainbow Glitch

Russian dreampop band Your Friends Polymers released a new single, and their first for a couple of years, at the end of December.  Like A Rainbow Glitch is an shimmering, ethereal track that makes me imagine I am drifting on clouds and at risk of falling asleep to Alexandra Zagainova’s lovely voice. A blissful and, at times, beautiful track. Facebook Continue reading Your Friends Polymers – Like A Rainbow Glitch
