Something For The Weekend? Three Albums

This weeks pack of three consists of three albums on my shopping list. Últim Cavall – Alaska This one has me hooked straight from the off. Literally straight from the opening bars of first track Els llacs which blends seamlessly into Incendi and then into current favourite Tornar A Casa it’s a dreamy journey throughout. It’s a case of not looking back and before you know it you reach the gentle vibes of the closing track Totes Les Flors. Alaska is an indiepop/dreampop album you can fully immerse yourself in and just let go. Divine. Alaska is available on vinyl … Continue reading Something For The Weekend? Three Albums

The Gory Alices – Swimsuit Aliens

The Gory Alices describes themselves as “a horror punk and surf rock band”. Despite only forming earlier this year Swimsuit Aliens is their second EP and leads on from their debut, the 21st Century Cosmic Freak Show EP. Their music is, and you will not be surprised given their description, is a mix of rock ‘n’ roll, garage, punk inspired riffs and comic humour. The strongest instrument though is the voice of Gory Alice herself whose strong vocals bring the stories being told in the songs to life and you can let your imagination run riot as she belts the … Continue reading The Gory Alices – Swimsuit Aliens

Guitar Days – An Unlikely Story of Brazilian Music

There are some interesting compilations turning up on Bandcamp of late. Guitar Days – An Unlikely Story of Brazilian Music is the soundtrack to the documentary of the same name which tells the story, coinciding with Brazil’s transition to democracy, that a new wave of bands emerged who looked to the US, UK and Australia for inspiration and who chose to sing in English rather than Portuguese. Aside from The Pin Ups and The Cigarettes these bands are new to me. I enjoyed the racket made by Garage Fuzz and New Ground by Valv. Musically most of it’s not my … Continue reading Guitar Days – An Unlikely Story of Brazilian Music

Gascoigne – Hook Line Sinker

I mentioned Indonesian indie rock band Texpack the other day and today we hear from another highly band from that country. Jakarta based Gascoigne have been around for a few years now and are due to release a new album, titled Bond Electric, on Anoa Records. Hook Line Sinker is the first taster from said album and it has a distinctive US slacker/college rock sound that comes with a lot of bounce and catchy vocals. Gascoigne? Paul the other one (I will get me coat….) Continue reading Gascoigne – Hook Line Sinker

Texpack – Perfect Buzz

Perfect Buzz is proof that not all Indonesian bands take their inspiration from the city of Bristol in England’s west country. Perfect Buzz takes its lead from Seattle born grunge before settling on an all encompassing college rock sound. However, it’s the fuzzy guitar sound of Ocean Breath I prefer and the vocals somehow gives the song a poppier edge. These two tracks were originally found on the 2016 Courageous EP released on Hujan! Rekords and they have now been released as a free download single on Dismantled. An album follows later this year on Anoa Records. Continue reading Texpack – Perfect Buzz

Бадди Психолли – Нойз-поп для начинающих

Or as the label, Pow! Pop Kids, kindly translates Noise-pop for Beginners by Buddy Psycholly. It’s more than simply noise pop though and a lot of it is very clever indie and jangle pop that’s packed with ideas. There are plenty of rock ‘n’ roll hooks for one. Opener Молодость и красота (Youth and Beauty) starts off like Tommy Roe’s Sheila before turning into an indiepop dancefloor staple. It continues on Беги (Run) which could be the sound of the forbidden Soviet rock ‘n’ roll underground. There is also surf pop in the shape of the band’s cover of The … Continue reading Бадди Психолли – Нойз-поп для начинающих

Na Grebne Volny – Следи за огнем

Oh er. On this release Na Grebne Volny turn into a full-on surf pop band with two instrumental tracks that make the listener think of the beaches of Southern California rather than the colder climate of Pereslavl-Zalessky which is where the band are from. You could also imagine that Dick Dale is on guitar. That said I hope the band revert to their previous sound at some point because I miss the lovely voice of their singer! VK.Com Continue reading Na Grebne Volny – Следи за огнем

Singles Going Steady……

Another round up of singles and EP’s for your listening pleasure…… Blushing – The Truth / Sunshine The first single to be taken from dreampoppers Blushing’s debut album due for release early next year. The flip side Sunshine is a shimmering delight in the way Lush sounded when they first emerged many moons ago. Get your vinyl copy of the single from here. Facebook The Hannah Barberas – No Mystery EP Another fine EP from the fans of Jessica Fletcher. It’s more consistent than the debut EP and I really like the Throwing Muses like Spellbound. The EP is currently … Continue reading Singles Going Steady……

Bearcats & Horrible/Adorable – Split

Bearcats deliver a catchy, sometimes sleazy (and with that title it could not be anything else) garage/riot grrrl crossover on Gutter Pussy which is worth every part of it’s 109 seconds. New to these ears are Horrible Adorable who give us a blend of rock n’ roll, surf pop and garage on Surf, Rock, Beach, Party, UFO which reminds me of the Fizzbombs around the time of their second single. Despite which side you prefer both tracks here are essential listening. Out now via Yr First Crush. Bearcats (Facebook) Horrible Adorable (Facebook) Continue reading Bearcats & Horrible/Adorable – Split
