Atta Girl -Betty’s Begonia

Betty’s Begonia is the first I have heard from Atta Girl. It’s a great EP where shouty pop, garage, riot grrrl and twee/indiepop collide. The vocals are unique and distinctive to say the least whilst the music supplements them to great effect. I guess they will not be everyone’s cup of tea but thankfully they are mine. And given the origins of their name, there is also an excellent cover of Heavenly’s P.U.N.K Girl here too. It’s out now on cassette via Trrrash Records or as a pay what you want download. Something For The Weekend? Three revisited

This week’s threesome covers new releases from bands I have mentioned before. Verbludes – долги Indiepop from Russia. Apparently it’s about being in debt. I think my ears are! The Death Of Pop – Like Always This is the first we have heard from The Death Pop for almost a year. It’s a finely polished tune encompassing their jangling guitar sound. It’s also their best track for some time. Facebook Peach Club – Mission Impossible Another assault on the senses from Norwich based riot grrrls Peach Club. Mission Impossible is an honest and memorable blast at sexism and double standards … Continue reading Something For The Weekend? Three revisited

Bruising/Personal Best – Split 7″

Two of my favourite discoveries of recent years have joined forces for a forthcoming split 7″ single for the Too Pure singles club. Personal Best give us mishapen guitars and lyrics that bite whilst Bruising take a more romantic approach with a sweeter, candy coated effort. Neither side of the split disappoint and this excellent 7″ is definately one for your valentine! You will need to subscribe to the Too Pure Singles club to get it although it may be available separately at some point in the future. The Personal Best track can be picked up digitally via their Bandcamp … Continue reading Bruising/Personal Best – Split 7″

Records I Like Top 10 2016

Blimey. This year’s list was hard to compile given that I restrict myself to just 10 choices (self-inflicted stupidity!). I have been listening to plenty of punk, coldwave, indie-pop, riot grrrl, queercore, garage and post-punk but I think this selection is a fair reflection of my listening habits these past 12 months. Tracks missing the cut include the likes of Underworld, Joanna Gruesome, The Radio Dept., The Legends, Earth Girls,The Liminanas, Red Sleeping Beauty, Massive Attack, Jessica & The Fletchers, Vital Idles, Useless Youth, E’spaniel, Nice Try, Hate Week, Primetime, Tape Waves, The Wolfhounds, Merchandise, Slam, Blind Delon, Lad’s Mags, … Continue reading Records I Like Top 10 2016

Finishing Off….. 2016

After scrolling through my bookmarks here are some releases that deserved posts of their own but a busier solstice than usual has prevented that so please divert your ears into the direction of the following: Swimming Tapes – Set The Fire / Souvenirs Excellent debut 7″ from this London based alternative pop band. Facebook Son Bou – Cinta Indiepop from Barcelona. Out now on cassette from Snap! Clap! Facebook Kamikaze Girls – SAD Kamikaze Girls could be described as an angrier and noisier version of Curve. Stitches is a must hear. Facebook Fascinations Grand Chorus – Actor/Actress More dreamy 1960’s … Continue reading Finishing Off….. 2016

Skux – The Two Sides of She

It’s a tale of two halves on the debut release from Kiwi/US outfit Skux. Opener, and possibly one of the tracks of the year so far, On Her Way is a an addictive, pleasing punk pop song that worms it’s way into your brain such is it’s catchiness. Flip side More Than 10 Things, based on the 10 Things I Hate About You film, doesn’t grab your attention in the same way and they could have done with the guitars being turned up whilst the singer is venting her spleen. A grower I suspect. That’s if I ever stop playing … Continue reading Skux – The Two Sides of She

Enemy Anemone / Cougar Vox- Split Single

Another day and another great release on Emotional Response courtesy of this fine split single. Enemy Anemone is Jen Turrell (Boyracer) who delivers three slabs of post punk inspired pop songs with the longest running in a 1m28s. Making slightly longer tunes is Australian band Cougar Vox who deliver the EP’s finest moment on the pop punk joy that is Cragieburn, a moment that should inspire you to jump up and down such is it’s infectiousness. The EP finishes with another punk/riot grrrl inspired effort from the latter that will certainly have me seeking out more of their work. Out … Continue reading Enemy Anemone / Cougar Vox- Split Single

Various Artists – Fuzz Pop

As some of you may have gathered from this blog I prefer the fuzzier side of indiepop. Definitely no flippin’ ukuleles for me and cut down on the glockenspiels too (although I admit some bands do use those to good effect). So this cassette compilation from Stoke On Trent’s Very Gun Records is right up my street. Fuzz Pop features twenty noisy & fuzzy tunes from a variety of bands most of whom I have not heard before. It’s early days on the listening front but I am already drawn to tracks by Gurr, Love Cuts and Expert Alterations. As … Continue reading Various Artists – Fuzz Pop

Need We Say More (no) – Too Many Dead/Superstition corner

Need We Say More (no) are a one off all grrrrl band featuring Helen (Shrag), Steph (The Blue Minkies, Summer Hunter, Shrag) and Kathy (The Thermals). They recorded a couple of tracks and this is the result for London’s Freakscene label. You shouldn’t be at all surprised that they sound like most the aforementioned bands! It’s out now digitally and you can also get it bundled with postcards and pocxket mirrors. See the label’s bandcamp page for more.
