Fascinations Grand Chorus – Until I Found You

Continuing this weekends incidental 1960’s influenced theme today we have New Yorkers Fascinations Grand Chorus delivering their polished and effective brand of retro pop music. Thanks, mainly to singer Stephanie’s voice, you can take your pick and compare the band to any number of girl bands as you like. Grand by name and grand by nature. Candy – Apartment In The City

Melbourne’s Candy is one Calum Newton (ex Lunatics on Pogosticks and Amyl and the Sniffers). Newton’s music first caught my ear with the lovely Azure and his forthcoming album Under The Weather is about his struggles during a period of homelessness last year. There have been four “singles” taken from the album so far and Apartment In The City is my pick of the bunch. Despite it’s sombre tone the music, a mix between bedroom and dream pop, gives the song a tranquil feel with Newton’s vocals and lyrics being clearly noticeable throughout. The aforementioned album is out on November … Continue reading Candy – Apartment In The City

Tallies – Mother

This track came out as a single back in May but I can finally give it a plug as it’s going to be on the forthcoming debut album. Starting like a northern soul floor stomper it soon morphs into alt rock – think Belly or Throwing Muses and singer Sarah Cogan’s vocals are on a par with the singers in both those bands. There is also some lovely jangling indiepop guitars throughout the song giving another angle which you will soon become entwined in. What’s not too like? The album, also called Tallies, will be out early next year on … Continue reading Tallies – Mother

The Records I Like Podcast – October 2018

I have been meaning to get back to using Mixcloud for a while now but I am a bit lazy and Playmoss is a doddle to use. But Mixcloud embeds in WordPress…. Anyway for this first “podcast” it features tracks mentioned on this blog, tracks from recent reissues and music I generally don’t cover. So enjoy! Full Tracklisting 1 – Pop Will Eat Itself – Sweet Sweet Pie Taken from the PWEI Def Coms 86-18 Compilation (Cherry Red) 2 – Say Sue Me – Just Joking Around The band’s current single (Damnably) 3 – Chasms – Divine Illusions Stunning yet … Continue reading The Records I Like Podcast – October 2018

Clouds – A Records I Like Playlist (October #1)

Another bump crop of tunes for you to enjoy. There is a lot of good stuff out there at present so dive in by clicking on the image – you will need to allow pop ups. EDIT. If the tracks skip (Playmoss bug) head to the links below. More playlists can be found here and the Playmoss page is here. PS. I haven’t mentioned it but if you haven’t noticed there is a new menu item called videos where I quickly post, erm videos, of tracks to keep the site ticking over. So if you are thinking it’s a bit … Continue reading Clouds – A Records I Like Playlist (October #1)

Mt. Mélodie – Daydream Deceiver

Daydream Deceiver is the first single to be taken from the forthcoming debut Are We There Yet? although I thought The Sea Of Trees was. Actually it’s worth the wait as it sounds like the band have come on leaps and bounds since the former track from 2016. Daydream Deceiver is a catchy, tuneful romp through the various ages fusing 1980’s indie and 1960’s baroque pop. Let’s hope the album delivers based on this taster! Facebook Continue reading Mt. Mélodie – Daydream Deceiver

Bootchy Temple – Lady Sunshine

The Bordeaux based band Bootchy Temple have been releasing tunes for a few year now but this is the first time I have heard anything by them. And what an introduction it is as Lady Sunshine sounds like Stereolab if they were making a track for inclusion on C86. It’ s short, sweet and brilliant. Must delve into their back catalogue at some point – adds another name to the list! Lady Sunshine is taken from the album Glimpses that will be released later this month on Howlin’ Banana Records. Pre-order from here. Facebook Continue reading Bootchy Temple – Lady Sunshine

Grrrl Gang – Not Sad, Not Fulfilled

More songs mainly about love, both shared and unrequited, from Indonesian indiepoppers Grrrl Gang who do their C86 thing to great effect especially on old fave Dream Grrrl. Things get more interesting on the melancholic Night Terrors and the Riot Grrrl inspired, both lyrically and musically, Guys Don’t Read Sylvia Plath which could be their finest moment to date. Given I said that in my last post their next track should be an absolute corker! Instagram Continue reading Grrrl Gang – Not Sad, Not Fulfilled

На гребне волны – Облака EP

I am still unsure what the band’s name in English. Is it still On the Crest of a Wave or now as Google is suggesting Point Break? To be honest I don’t care because what I do know is that this is another fine EP full of well crafted indiepop songs. It’s the lovely female ethereal vocals (think Flowers Rachel Kenedy) that are going to hit home first before the guitars and percussion grab your attention. The music varies from the classic 1980’s indie pop sound (‘Нет продолжения’) to 1960’s surf music (‘Воробьевы горы’) whilst it’s the title track, which … Continue reading На гребне волны – Облака EP
