Amida – Boring Birth

Amida have been plugging away for a few years now with their excellent singles and live shows. They have finally released their debut album and despite the fact it contains 13 tracks it’s all over just over the half hour mark. Now that’s my type of album. Excellent jangling and melodic indiepop invoking everyone from The Chills to the Wedding Present. It’s out now on Jigsaw Records or buy digitally from the band. Univers – L’Estat Natural

Univers hail from Barcelona and on their debut album L’Estat Natural they initially suggest to me that they are a Catalan version of a Sea Monsters era Wedding Present. However subsequent listens suggest they are poppier than that with more than a state side slant. The sulky vocals, crashing guitars and the pulsating drive in each song more than make up for the fact that, unless you speak Catalan, you have no idea what they are singing about. Music is a univers (al) language indeed. Excellent stuff. Buy on vinyl from the label or digitally from the band. Facebook Continue reading Univers – L’Estat Natural

The Popguns – Lovejunky

Not only have the Popguns joined the ever increasing list of 1980’s indiepop bands to reform these past couple of years they have also gone one better by reusing the title of their third album as the lead track on their first EP since 1996’s Harley Davidson single. It will be a three track affair and will be out on Matinee Recordings in the summer and the title track will be backed by Long Way To Fall and Home Late. And what does Lovejunky sound like? Well just like they haven’t been away to be honest. It could easily fit … Continue reading The Popguns – Lovejunky

Heathers – I Know

Heathers are releasing the tracks they produced for Part Time Punks as part of their annual John Peel celebration last year over on bandcamp. It’s available as a cassette or digitally with the latter being a free download if ya want. I Know features four Wedding Present covers – well three as Getting Nowhere Fast was originally by Girls At Our Best. It’s a popular song as it has also been covered recently by The Fireworks. Nice Legs – Lullaby Land

Seoul based Nice Legs are Mark Lentz and Lauren E Walker and Lullaby Land is their first EP. It’s diy indiepop throughout reminding me of The San Marinos – rememeber them? – especially on the first track. Granted it get’s a tad predictable in places but there is plenty here to suggest that they are fully capable of making a special song or two in the future. Facebook Continue reading Nice Legs – Lullaby Land

When Nalda Became Punk – Indiepop or Whatever! EP

This EP has been out for a couple of months now and I have to say it’s well worth the wait. Whilst there is nowt original here and that they rigidly stick to an indiepop template it’s all very well done and just screams pop at you in the same way as releases from the likes of Zipper and The Fireworks have done before them; none more so than on the title track. Whilst in the UK bands dead for yonks incessantly reform it’s up to bands from Spain to lead the way. Muchas gracias….. The Indiepop or Whatever! EP … Continue reading When Nalda Became Punk – Indiepop or Whatever! EP
