Univers hail from Barcelona and on their debut album L’Estat Natural they initially suggest to me that they are a Catalan version of a Sea Monsters era Wedding Present. However subsequent listens suggest they are poppier than that with more than a state side slant. The sulky vocals, crashing guitars and the pulsating drive in each song more than make up for the fact that, unless you speak Catalan, you have no idea what they are singing about. This EP has been out for a couple of months now and I have to say it’s well worth the wait. Whilst there is nowt original here and that they rigidly stick to an indiepop template it’s all very well done and just screams pop at you in the same way as releases from the likes of Zipper and The Fireworks have done before them; none more so than on the title track.
