The Wellington – It’s So Fine

Indonesian band The Wellington follow up their recent split single with The Sweetest Touch with a taster for their forthcoming debut album. It’s So Fine sees the band drop the psychedelic and baroque influences from the aforementioned split single and replacing them with a sound reminiscent of Creation Records 1989/90. Given that the latest Ride album is yet another disappointment The Wellington are a worthy replacement to fill their shoes based on this excellent dreamy, retro sounding track. Roll on that album! Something For The Weekend? Three From Today’s Inbox

This weeks pack of three features three bands whose latest tracks turned up in today’s very busy Bandcamp inbox…. Egoism – What Are We Doing? Australians Egoism make catchy indiepop/dreampop tunes and What Are We Doing? is no exception. Featuring addictive vocals and a hook laden melody, it’s their best song to date to these ears. Facebook Newmoon – Collide Into Me I have not heard Belgian band Newmoon, who have been around for a few years now, before. That’s a shame as Collide Into Me is a lovely, gentle dreampop song, despite the maudlin words, that tugs at ones … Continue reading Something For The Weekend? Three From Today’s Inbox

Tokyo Tea Room – Always Tomorrow

On Always Tomorrow Tokyo Tea Room produce music that crosses dream pop, psychedelia and Balearic beats. Heavenly vocals mix it up with downtempo, sometimes dubby electronica whilst the translucent guitars do their thing. It’s almost spiritual in parts and the artwork, which reminds me of ambient cover sleeves from the early 1990s, adds to that feel. A tune as great as the band’s name! Tara – Wander

For their second track New York based Tara wanted to make a danceable track with the same instruments/approach they used on their first single Second Guess. Parts of the Wander remind me of any number of tracks which were all the rage in the indie dance clubs circa 1988-1991 whilst, for those not as old as me!, other parts emphasise the blissful harmonies and ethereal vocals heard on the aforementioned first single. Which ever way you look (listen?) at it, it’s a pleaser. Facebook Continue reading Tara – Wander

Soft Blue Shimmer – Nothing Happens Here

Los Angles based Soft Blue Shimmer have got the title of this release wrong because there is plenty happening on their debut EP! Encompassing most, if not all spheres, of both dreampop and shoegaze the five tracks here range from the ethereal to noisy. The vocals are careful, delivered gradually as the guitars twist and warp. The blissful Dream Beam Supreme is my pick of the bunch but here is plenty more here/hear to excite! The Nothing Happens Here EP is available on cassette and digital formats from the band’s bandcamp page. Facebook Continue reading Soft Blue Shimmer – Nothing Happens Here

Shoe Shine Six – Cold Sun

Cold Sun brings together Yekaterinburg based Shoe Shine Six with Kyoto outfit Tip Top Nap whose vocalist Natsumi Yamamoto contributes to the words and sings alongside the host band’s Anna Lapina. It’s a shining example of dreampop with strong, dominant female vocals accompanying the vibrating guitar as the song swirls in unabashed abandon. Impressive. The Records I Like Mix July 2019

A new mix compiling tracks from the past month or so. Plenty of C86 influenced music this time alongside the usual mix of shoegaze, janglepop and alt-rock. Full Tracklisting: Death Of Heather – Mind It’s a song that features slow simmering guitars that echo profoundly alongside hushed vocals which sing of someone who isn’t out of mind but yet isn’t here or there. The Proctors – Letters To The Girl And what a belter we have on our hands, well ears! Jangling guitars, catchy boy/girl vocals and a melody to die for. Holy Now – It Will All End In Tears … Continue reading The Records I Like Mix July 2019

Lorelei – I Am a Road

I guess any band who may have well taken their name from a Cocteau Twins song is always going to sound this dreamy. Swirling sounds mixed with ethereal vocals puts the dream right into dreampop in a big way. The way the song ends hazily with the vocals sounding like they were lifted straight from 4AD’s catalogue in the 1980s is extremely pleasing to these ears. I guess it would have the same effect on yours too. Facebook Continue reading Lorelei – I Am a Road

Anajunno – Fuegoinvierno

It’s turning into an Argentinian themed weekend! Anajunno hail from Santa Fe, Argentina and Fuegoinvierno, which translates as Winterfire, is the follow-up to 2017s self titled debut. Anajunno’s music is primarily dreampop, but they also delve into other spheres. For example Julia Knows flirts with psychedelic pop whilst the instrumental Generador de pruebas is an excellent drone inspired track which reminds me of Eat Lights Become Lights. Another instrumental track Video 2000 is relaxing in a space rock sort of way. It’s the dreampop I prefer and the “poppier” the better. Both Burn The House and Salud temporal are cases … Continue reading Anajunno – Fuegoinvierno
