Catching Up with Long Players!

Young Romance – Another’s Blood After what seemed like aeons Young Romance finally released their debut album at the back end of last month. Because of that the album does have that “best of” feel but given the likes of previous singles Pale and Wild who can really complain? Buy it from here or digitally from the band. Facebook Bubblegum Lemonade – The Great Leap Backward I must admit to having mixed feelings about Bubblegum Lemonade these days. I was not too impressed by July’s Beard On A Bike EP as, aside from the title track, the rest of their … Continue reading Catching Up with Long Players!

The Popguns – Pop Fiction

I have finally got around to listening to the new album from The Popguns and like the recent single Lovejunky (included here) there are no real surprises here in comparison to their previous ouput – their last album A Plus de Cent came out in 1996. However when that is all done & said it’s a thoroughly enjoyable listen and isn’t that what it is all about? The aforementioned single is a highlight as is Still Waiting For The Winter which harks back to a certain single from 1989. Only on Not Your Night Tonight does that pace take a … Continue reading The Popguns – Pop Fiction

The Popguns – Lovejunky 7″

The Lovejunky 7″ contains the first new Popguns songs for 18 years. Whilst that is a long time The Popguns sound hasn’t changed one bit. Phew. The label claim it’s a smash hit. Who am I to disagree? Classic, vintage indiepop…….. It’s out on limited edition cherry red vinyl and the title track is backed with Long Way To Fall and Home Late. Neither of these tracks will appear on the forthcoming Pop Fiction album. Lovejunky is out now on Matinee Recordings. Order from here. Facebook PS: I know I mentioned this song back in June but it’s out now!!! Continue reading The Popguns – Lovejunky 7″

The Popguns – Lovejunky

Not only have the Popguns joined the ever increasing list of 1980’s indiepop bands to reform these past couple of years they have also gone one better by reusing the title of their third album as the lead track on their first EP since 1996’s Harley Davidson single. It will be a three track affair and will be out on Matinee Recordings in the summer and the title track will be backed by Long Way To Fall and Home Late. And what does Lovejunky sound like? Well just like they haven’t been away to be honest. It could easily fit … Continue reading The Popguns – Lovejunky

Matinee Hit Parade 2013

Matinee has released a stash of stuff recently which I have not had the time to write about including the new album from Bubblegum Lemonade and a new Northern Portrait compilation amongst others. If, like me, you need to catch up on the label’s activities Matinee have put together a soundcloud playlist entitled 2013 hit parade featuring forty tracks that have featured on releases this year. For those who prefer Spotify I have created a version in that too. Homepage Continue reading Matinee Hit Parade 2013

Various Artists – A Sunday Matinee

Matinee Recordings celebrate their 15th year as a record label this month. As part of the celebrations they are releasing a new 15 track compilation which features new, unreleased or rare tracks from their stable of artists. Personally I am really pleased to hear the track from The Electric Pop Group after four years as I thought they were dead or something! The new track from Strawberry Whiplash is pretty fine whilst Brazil’s Pale Sunday also pack the goods too. Oh and Northern Portrait. And Bubblegum Lemonade………. You can order the CD from here. Seabirds – Real Tears

Another day, another 7″ release on the Matinee label. This time it’s the turn of Nottingham’s Seabirds. I don’t know anything about the band as of yet but I have spotted Ian from Horowitz in their lineup. That alone should be a recommendation to check them out but it’s a great song regardless of who is actually in the band! The single is out next month and no doubt it will appear here in due course.
