No Vacation – Intermission Dreamy, laid-back music from Californian’s No Vacation. It’s easy to drift off and daydream to these tracks especially on opener Yam Yam which sets the tone for the EP. If indiepop clubs had chill out rooms this could well be the soundtrack. Available on vinyl, cassette and digital formats from here. Facebook Poppel – Hit It Staying with the dreamy vibe Hit It is the debut album from Belgian jangle poppers Poppel. These songs are short, sweet and very jangly with only one passing the 3 minute mark – by a second! Pleasure is my pick … Continue reading Ending 2017 #5

The Autumn Sighs – Green The Green EP is the latest release from German shoegazers The Autumn Sighs who stick to the template rigidly and deliver a beautiful, haunting EP reminiscent of The Pale Saints. Shoegaze at it’s finest. The EP is out on Dreams Never End. Facebook Your Friends Polymers – v chuzhoi strane Sticking on the shoegaze/dreampop theme we next head to Russia and the latest one from Your Friends Polymers who finally follow up 2015’s Chudesa EP. Thankfully their music is much better than their name and this is one of the best EP’s in the genre … Continue reading Ending 2017 #4

Christmas Single Jingles

Some Christmas releases to catch the ear. Seafang – Happy When It Snows Actually this, like all of Seafang’s releases to date, is actually pretty good. Shoegaze (or should that be snowgaze) mixed with the sounds of C86 delivers one of the better holiday songs I have heard. They also cover The Primitives You Trashed My Christmas for good measure too. Facebook Girl Ray – (I Wish I Were Giving You a Gift) This Christmas Epic indiepop from Girl Ray. There is so much going on here you are going to have to play it a few times to take … Continue reading Christmas Single Jingles

And the round up continues…. Pip Blom – Babies Are A Lie/School Two slices of apprehensive and anxious indiepop from Dutch based Pip Blom. Both these tracks are catchy with rough sounding fuzzy guitars and heavy bass riffs. Available on 7″ and digital formats from here. Facebook Color TV – Paroxeteens 7″ Excellent punk rock with a poppier edge than usual from Minnesota’s Colour TV. Short, sweet and loud! Available from here. Facebook Patsy’s Rats – Is It Alright?/Givin’ Up Is It Alright is pop punk (or is it powerpop?) at it’s finest. Flip side Givin’ Up errs on the … Continue reading Ending 2017 #3

Continuing with the series of round ups. Underwater Obstacles – Meet Me I have really been enjoying Underwater Obstacles morose offerings of late. Meet Me is the latest track and is a great alternative gothic song. An album entitled Ghosts Of Trees is forthcoming. Wintermilk – Sonnik Ethereal shoegaze from Russia. The band have released a few songs to date but this is the first sung in their native language. Sonnik, or Dream Book in English, reminds me of The Cranes mixing it up with The Sundays and is not too dissimilar to some of Ummagma’s recent work. Lovely stuff. … Continue reading Ending 2017 #2

Ending 2017 #1

As we hurtle to the end of 2017 I am trying to collate a number of releases over the next few posts. Sky Faction – Sky Faction Sky Faction have members of Starry Eyed Cadet amongst their ranks so if you are familiar with that band you may guess how this lot sound. If not then we have five indiepop tracks that may delight or annoy in equal measure. Whilst No One Else is an absolute delight I am pegged back by the over complicated Miss Solitary and the dreary Mar. Thankfully things pick up on Lactose Intolerant and the … Continue reading Ending 2017 #1

Pale Lights – Jean, Bring the Flowers EP

Pale Lights are making a bit of a “commotion” with this release because they are sounding like Lloyd Cole and the aforementioned more now than ever both vocally and musically. Obviously that’s not a bad thing but the comparison is the first thing will come into the listener’s mind. Get past that and there are three excellent songs here none more so than the lead track. Get ready to be…………. A new album The Stars Seemed Brighter is out later this week via Kleine Untergrund Schallplatten. In the meantime pick this EP up digitally from here. Facebook Continue reading Pale Lights – Jean, Bring the Flowers EP

Crime of Passing – Dancing Prick EP

Three slabs of atmospheric post punk from this new band from Cincinnati. Like the cover art these tracks could have easily come from 1978-1981 and contains echoes of the likes of Essential Logic, Swell Maps, The Slits to name but a few. Opener Day In, Day Out is my personal highlight but it was a close call. Available on cassette from Wasted Tapes or pick it up digitally from the band.
