Chestnut Bakery – Tunnel Party

I first heard the wonderfully named Chinese band Chestnut Bakery on the My Secret World compilation that came out back in August. The title alone should suggest clues on how they sound but if not then how about a mention of Sarah Records? This is classy indiepop with a hint of shoegaze going on in the background. Original no but enjoyable very much yes so! Tunnel Party is taken from the band’s forthcoming album Diaries which will be released later this month. You can get it from here. Tender Age – Get High

I think I have listened to more shoegaze infused music this year than I have for some time. Most of it has been very dull and uninspiring but thankfully there are some exceptions like this single from Portland’s Tender Age. Using Creation Records as a template the band build upon their influences and deliver the goods. Personally I would be disappointed if they sounded like this several releases down the line but there is time them to grow and develop further loosening the shackles of their obvious influences. Night Flowers – Sleep

Night Flowers return with both a new vocalist and single. Sleep is at the poppier end of the shoegazing barometer and new singer Sophia Pettit’s voice is used to great effect alongside the shimmering guitars. Flip side Sitting Pretty sees the band still sounding like an early Pains of Being Pure At Heart but, hey, that is no bad thing. Pinkshinyultrablast – Kiddy Pool Dreams

Spanking new single from Russian experimental shoegazers Pinkshinyultrablast. It’s backed with a version on the flip and is out on Club AC30 on October 2nd. Sadly the limited edition vinyl has sold out but you will be able to get it in digital formats via the usual places. Lowtide – Julia​/​Spring

The latest single from Melbourne dreampoppers Lowtide is a cover of Julia by French post punk band Asylum Party. It’s a cracking cover with the shimmering guitars and joyous joint vocals really doing the original justice. However it’s the flip side Spring that deserves the plaudits here as it develops into a track of anthem like proportions that will have your feet tapping and your head nodding in unison such is it’s pull. The Morelings – Lonesome Tonight

A shimmering dreampop cover of New Order’s Lonesome Tonight by The Morelings who have taken the original and made it their own rather than make a carbon copy. It’s taken from Dreams Never End, A Tribute To New Order which is currently available via the Brazilian label The Blog That Celebrates Itself Records which has a history of releasing tribute albums. Air Formation – The Wasted Days

Four years after calling it a day eminent shoegazers Air Formation return with a new single. Were We Ever Here features four songs and the label have posted final track The Wasted Days as a taster. Forevr – Demonstration

An excellent debut EP from Brisbane duo Forever which gives a big nod to the influences of the likes of My Bloody Valentine and the Telescopes.  Indeed it could be a Creation Records time capsule from 1988. The EP has a distorted yet fragile sound which soon shatters like glass or falling icicles. The vocals are shimmering and beautiful as they fade in and out. Star Horse – Slower Now/Wherever You

Nice melodic shoegaze from Sweden that draws comparisons from The Cocteau Twins to Slowdive. There is a lot of this about at present but rather than being a pale imitation Star Horse take these influences and turn them into something lovely especially on Slower Now with singer/guitarist Maja’s vocals standing out.
