Primetime – Pervert

Pervert is the standout track from the new 7″ EP from London’s Primetime. Titled Going Places it’s packed full of post punk influenced tracks that would not have sounded out of place in the late 1970’s. However it’s the catchy as feck Pervert that grabs my attention sounding like a cross between The Buzzcocks, Fire Engines and any number of female fronted post punk bands such as Flowers (the original ones!) or Kleenex. Essential! It’s out now on La Vida Es un Mus. Buy it on 7″ from the label or digitally from the band. Facebook Continue reading Primetime – Pervert

Hard Left – Economy

Another slab of punk and mod infused tunes this time complete with homage to a revolutionary German writer, poetry from the east end, gentrification angst and DH Lawrence quotes. Why can’t all records be like this? It would make a fine present for those poor souls affected by the recent Panama papers….. Economy is out now in 7″, cassette and digital formats. Get it from here. Cayetana – Tired Eyes

Tired Eyes features two tracks neither of which bears that name although the words appear in opener freedom 1313 which is a fine slab of slow, building alternative rock complete with some sublime vocals. The flip side sees a pretty damn good effort of covering New Order’s Age of Consent that stays true to the original but also manages sound distinctive again thanks to the vocals.  There is enough here for me to pay a visit to their previous work. Tired Eyes is available as a 7″ from Asian Man Records or digitally on a pay what you want basis … Continue reading Cayetana – Tired Eyes

This Cold Night – While I Disappear

A fine gothic inspired post punk EP from Austin’s This Cold Night to start 2016 with. It’s dark, gloomy and painful both musically and lyrically none more so than on stand out tracks Black Cathedral and Death Knell which come complete with bleak vocals backed by minimal synths. If the likes of Bauhaus, Red Lorry Yellow Lorry and Joy Division bring joy to your heart then rest assured This Cold Night will too. Available on cassette from Sination or digitally from the artist. Records I Like Top 10 2015

2015 was the year I listened to the shoegaze and post punk revivalists in earnest. Club AC30 and Manic Depression Records both deserve a mention alongside the usual cohorts of Dufflecoat Records and Oddbox Records who delivered their signature brand of indiepop, diy and noise pop. I also started listening to full albums again with efforts from The Chills, Beirut and Robert Forster being high on the recommended list. I am still catching up with my backlog though and being heavily played these past few weeks are the likes of Appendixes and Tomiji. So without further ado here is my … Continue reading Records I Like Top 10 2015

Various – Chrimbo With You

Emotional Response have certainly had a busy end of year. They have now released a Christmas Compilation which features contributions from label owners Stewart & Jen under a variety of guises as well as contributions from their mates. It’s a mix of the usual seasonal nonsense that these compilations generally bring but it has a large fun element too especially on the contributions from Summer Cats, Department Engineering Help Desk and Enemy Anemone. Out now for peanuts on cassette or digital formats. It’s only available until Christmas day. Homepage Continue reading Various – Chrimbo With You

Enemy Anemone / Cougar Vox- Split Single

Another day and another great release on Emotional Response courtesy of this fine split single. Enemy Anemone is Jen Turrell (Boyracer) who delivers three slabs of post punk inspired pop songs with the longest running in a 1m28s. Making slightly longer tunes is Australian band Cougar Vox who deliver the EP’s finest moment on the pop punk joy that is Cragieburn, a moment that should inspire you to jump up and down such is it’s infectiousness. The EP finishes with another punk/riot grrrl inspired effort from the latter that will certainly have me seeking out more of their work. Out … Continue reading Enemy Anemone / Cougar Vox- Split Single

Chorusgirl – Oh, To Be A Defector

It’s will soon be that time of year for list compiling and I have no doubt that Chorusgirl and their excellent New Moon single that was released on Oddbox Records earlier this year will be high up on my list. That 7″ is now long sold out but the good news is that both sides of that single plus a number of other cracking tracks including long time favourite Oh, To Be A Defector can be found on the band’s self titled debut album that is out now on Fortuna Pop. You can order the album from label here or … Continue reading Chorusgirl – Oh, To Be A Defector

The Agnes Circle – Modern Idea

London’s The Agnes Circle supply us with four slices of Gothic tinged post punk on their debut Modern Idea EP. Musically it echoes to the sound of the past. I can hear bits of Wire, The Cure, Joy Division and The Cocteau Twins amongst others. Florian Voytek’s strong vocals are also another plus drawing the listener in deeper and the end result is that this EP has been on repeat for a few days now. Excellent stuff…… It’s available digitally from the band. A 12″ version should be available soon via Manic Depression Records. Facebook Continue reading The Agnes Circle – Modern Idea

Forever Grey – The Red Hall

Another track from the prolific Forever Grey. Luckily it’s not a case of quantity over quality. The Red Hall again echoes to the sound of the past (is that Red Lorry Yellow Lorry’s Chris Reed on vocals?) but the addition of joint vocals once again shows a band expanding beyond their influences. And here is a live recording of Sourland taken from their September Ice EP. Facebook Continue reading Forever Grey – The Red Hall
