Various DIY Artists – Nobody’s Business

Nobody’s Business is the debut release from the people (well person) who brings you the Candy Twist Fanzine. It features a number of bands mentioned on these very pages (Fireworks, Martha, Lost tapes, Colour Me Wednesday etc etc) as well as a welcome return for the likes of Liechtenstein and Horowitz. I have been streaming this to death of late and as there are only going to be 250 copies (12″ vinyl) I had better get my order in sharpish come payday. Pre-order it here. Pre-orders come with a free and exclusive 48 page fanzine featuring interviews with the bands … Continue reading Various DIY Artists – Nobody’s Business

Girl One And The Grease Guns – (Here Come The) Catastrophe Machines

Girl One And The Grease Guns release their third 7″ of the year next week and it’s their best one yet. Titled (Here Come The) Catastrophe Machines it’s full of feedback and white noise! Metal dance indeed. It’s backed with Hitting The Brick Wall which is a lovely synth pop tune with melodies from the 1980’s. Order it from the label. The Fireworks – Runaround

The contenders for song of the year keep on coming. Originally sounding like a Subway Organisation tribute act (and there is definately nothing wrong with that in my view!) The Fireworks have totally expanded beyond that original pigeonhole and have now gone further musically more than I imagined they ever could after witnessing one of their first ever live shows a couple of years back. The mix between Emma’s vocals, the melodies that scream pop at ya and the fuzzy guitars are simply sublime. Simply put I love this! It’s on on 7″ and mp3 via Shelflife Records. Pre-order here. … Continue reading The Fireworks – Runaround

Flowers – Until You’re Dead EP

This week has seen the first release on Fortuna Pop from the ever wonderful Flowers. The band have signed to Kanine Records stateside so hopefully a US release will follow for fans across the pond. Until then buy it here. You can also get it digitally from the likes of Rough Trade. Stuck is the third song from the single and just features singer Rachel singing alone somewhat ethereally with just a one string bass for company. Colour Me Wednesday – I Thought It Was Morning

I Thought It Was Morning is infectious indiepop doused with diy ethos, politics, punk and a bit of reggae. That is about of much as a review as you are going to get out of me but something about Colour Me Wednesday’s music reminds me of how I felt over half a century ago when I first started getting really excited about music. This equals album of the year for me so far. Out now on Discount Horse Records or pick up in one of the many bundles from their bandcamp page. Darklands – Demo 2013

As the band’s name may suggest this is fuzzy and melodic alt rock. It’s an enjoyable romp across all three songs. The Cocteau Twins-ish cover ain’t bad either. Shortly after these demos were recorded bassist Michael Belcastro suffered a cerebral hemorrhage. Whilst the demos are free to download the band are asking for a contribution to be made to assist with his medical bills. A cassette version is on offer for donations of $10 or more.
