Jeanines – Demos

Two short but promising tracks from New York’s jeanines that manage to pack more in their one and a bit minutes than some of the other tracks I have been listening too recently which last 2-3 times as long. The singer sounds like a young Aggi from The Pastels (or on Buba & The Shop Assistants debut) and that may suggest to you that this is indiepop which sounds like it came from Scotland between 1983-1986. Well you would be right. I am getting impatient to hear more from this lot – more so than waiting for the next season … Continue reading Jeanines – Demos

Compilation Week – Russian Tour 2

This compilation, compiled by Belka Records who are based in Moscow and Paris, features Russian speaking bands from Russia and The Ukraine. Skip pass the dreadful first track and persevere. Only Verbludes were known to me before but after listening to this a few more will be too especially the glorious post-punk sounds of Gruppa Hmuriy and Fleece Flower as well as the indiepop of Park 17. As with all compilations what one person likes another will not so delve in and I am sure there will be something that grabs your attention before long. Available on cassette or digital … Continue reading Compilation Week – Russian Tour 2

Compilation Week – Fall 2017

Technically it’s still Autumn so I think I can get away with this one! Fall 2017 is the latest compilation from Slovakian tape label Z Tapes. I am not going to kid you and aside from Soft Pastels I have not heard of any of the other 26 bands featured. However there is some interesting stuff here and this release serves as a great introduction to the label. Stand out tracks include efforts from the likes of Leor Miller, Candy and Memoryville and the compilation covers bedroom pop, DIY, indiepop and lo-fi pop mixtape. Available on cassette from here or … Continue reading Compilation Week – Fall 2017

Compilation Week – Freakscene London 2014/2016

There are plenty of decent compilations to be had on Bandcamp at present and this week I will be rounding a few of them up. Freakscene London 2014/2016 compiles that label’s output for the years – well you guessed it – collated from their vinyl and flexi releases. There are tracks from the likes of Fever Dream, Tangible Excitement, The Sunny Street, The Yummy Four and many more. My personal highlight is Boyracer covering The Rosehips I Shouldn’t Have To Say. Available digitally although some of the original flexis and seven inches may still be available. Yours for a fiver … Continue reading Compilation Week – Freakscene London 2014/2016

Sometimes – A Records I Like Playlist (July 2017 #3)

A playlist covering the latest in indiepop, shoegaze, dreampop, riot grrl, garage and more. Plenty to listen out for here. The latest demo by Jetstream Pony is sublime and I purchased everything by Hiki based on hearing Closer for the first time. Honeyrude are new to me as well and their track The Color Blue has been a regular play this month alongside Alvvays and The Autumn Sighs. Enjoy! Something For The Weekend? Three from Kosmonaut

And onto this week’s pack of three. Kosmonaut, the band who feature ex-members of Bulldozer Crash, have released records their singles on esteemed labels such as Matinee Recordings, Firestation and Cloudberry Records. They recently released a number of tracks before, during and after the last weekend’s Easter/bank holiday weekend. Here are my three picks taken from the eight tracks released, all of which covered different styles and influences. Day In The Sun The experimental electronica one…… Debbie Harry’s Smile The punk pop one…….. Losing Friends The maudalin, guitar one….. You can buy all the tracks digitally from here. And here is a … Continue reading Something For The Weekend? Three from Kosmonaut

Slugger – Stay Loose

Possibly the first ever release I have bought from an artist who hails from Dorking but this EP isn’t a bad place to start. There are four tracks covering a mix of post-punk, lo-fi and DIY noise pop complete with scowling vocals that sometimes sound like they are sprawled in their delivery. Trails is my pick of the bunch here but to be fair there is not a filler track across the whole EP. Worth a listen as it February’s Barb EP. Get it from Bandcamp. Facebook Continue reading Slugger – Stay Loose

Candy – Azure

Excellent bedroom pop from Melbourne’s Candy which is the solo project of Calum Newton from Lunatics on Pogosticks. The songs here are like a journey through indiepop with echoes of the likes of C86 and Sarah Records amongst others being heard. Indeed songs like Reflections of U sound like they come from Glasgow rather than Melbourne. It’s pretty good and I will be checking out his previous work. It’s available on cassette (70 copies only!) from Slovakian label Z Tapes or get it digitally from Candy’s bandcamp page on a pay what you want basis. Facebook Bandcamp Continue reading Candy – Azure
