Battery Point – A Memory For Today

Sarah Records revivalists Battery Point deliver another fine EP that in part pays homage to the aforementioned label. Another Year and Time are on the melodic side of dreampop/shoegaze rather than the harsh version practised by Secret Shine – see they are not paying that much homage! That does come however with their cover of Another Sunny Day’s You Should All Be Murdered which covers this classic track with a layer of jangling guitars but sadly fails to create the beauty of the original. It’s not a bad effort mind! Facebook Continue reading Battery Point – A Memory For Today

Jeanines – Demos

Two short but promising tracks from New York’s jeanines that manage to pack more in their one and a bit minutes than some of the other tracks I have been listening too recently which last 2-3 times as long. The singer sounds like a young Aggi from The Pastels (or on Buba & The Shop Assistants debut) and that may suggest to you that this is indiepop which sounds like it came from Scotland between 1983-1986. Well you would be right. I am getting impatient to hear more from this lot – more so than waiting for the next season … Continue reading Jeanines – Demos

Various Artists – Popkiss

Brazilian label The Blog That Celebrates Itself Records specialises in releasing tribute albums which are either awful or great depending on your point of view. Popkiss is the latest volume and features tributes to tracks released on Sarah Records. It’s the obvious tracks that are covered here although the lack of any Sea Urchins covers come as a surprise. Whilst some of these covers are note for note versions (and to be fair the originals are perfect) there are some good efforts by Battery Point, Waving Blue amongst others. However the standout for me so far is the Glass Arcades … Continue reading Various Artists – Popkiss

The Poetry Book – Out Of Love / Forever EP

This is the first I have heard of Oaska’s The Poetry Book (I think!) and there are a number of releases on their Bandcamp page going back to 2015 which I will need to delve into after listening to this EP. Out Of Love is lovely, graceful swooning indiepop whilst Forever has a touch of The Radio Dept. about it with vocals that fade in and out of the steady beat. Not sure what the purpose of the instrumental track is and this single with have been more effective without it as a double A sided release – can you … Continue reading The Poetry Book – Out Of Love / Forever EP

Various – Strawberry Punks

Strawberry Punks is a compilation compiling five Indonesian bands who contribute a track each. This EP demonstrates how strong the Indonesian indiepop scene is. Go back a few years and whilst the music was good in most cases it was note for note copy of a any number of Sarah Records bands you could care to name. On this compilation however bands are now coming out of their comfort zone and expanding far from their influences none more so than The Whistling Possum and their track Them Are Pigs which fuses some of the danceable elements of post punk together … Continue reading Various – Strawberry Punks
