The second EP from the New York based Still Submarine develops the sound found on 2023’s Warmer Shades of You EP. Whilst a number of tracks found on that release erred on the gentler side of indiepop the others were a fusion of twee pop and shoegaze which they have named tweegaze. Well it sounds better than “shoepop” I guess!
The songs found on Unknowing Cat build on both, sounding so much more solid when it comes to their production. Opener Maine Lover is an instant indiepop classic thanks to the charming female vocals and the cute retro musical sounds that could have been plucked anywhere from the 1960s to the 1990s.
Utopia is a gentle sounding, harmonious affair with the female vocals being entwined by a twee-pop beat whilst the shoegaze influences finally appear on the title track with some hesitant guitar fuzziness sneaking in, providing melodic support for those lovely vocals once more.
Still Submarine are getting stronger and stronger which each release. Purchase the very listenable Unknowing Cat from here.
