What Others Are Saying #1

Shamelessly nicking Darrin from Janglepop’s idea of referring to other sites as part of his updated Beat The Delete future here is a round up of releases that I have enjoyed but yet, haven’t managed to write about.

Bobsled Team – Analita

“…..the sounds remain just as alluring as the Belfast duo always have, but somehow feels more stripped back, more retro in production, and where once there was beautiful swirl, there is now a considered deliberation where every note has its immediate place rather than being a part of a conglomerate of musical textures.”

“Hailing from Belfast, pop duo Bobsled Team brings us some new music in the form of a single, “Analita”, their first new track since 2021’s LP The Colours Blur. The track itself is a jangly dream-popgasm, with wistful-sounding distortion, a la The Sundays or Sixpence None The Richer, backing up singer Kimberly’s singsong voice.”

Blanco Tranco – Get Back To Me When It’s Over

“Epic walls of shimmering, jangling guitars feature across the six tracks in a dream pop reverie, accompanying indelible melodies and just that little twist of melancholia, needed in any good pop song. The themes are universal: the vicissitudes of life as you grow older and mature.”

Via Backstreet Mafia

Through a celestial tapestry woven with guitar lines drenched in reverb, introspective lyrics that provoke thought, and vocals that exude both blissful ache and captivating melodies, Blanco Tranco weaves a poignant narrative of yearning in their second EP. With profound grace, they embrace the notions of pain, metamorphosis, and the journey of self-discovery, all elegantly encapsulated within the embrace of six entrancing tracks.

The Chickpea Darlings – Beef EP

“New EP from the quintessentially British DIY middle-aged bedroom miserablists, bursting with insistent sparkling guitar melodies infused with jangly C86 aesthetic, as catchy as they are imbued with a dreamlike nostalgia and pensive melancholy, lyrically enhanced by airy atmospheric vocals releasing witty observations and angsty commentary.”

The Beef EP is a free download from here unless you fall into one of their categories made up of Tory MP’s, Brexiters etc when, rightly, you will have to pay for it.

Hoodie x James K – 065 (Scorpio)

“On “Scorpio,” James K’s melancholy lyrics about romance float over silvery electric guitar strums and a swaggering trip-hop groove. The aptly-titled back half, “Ether,” uses airy vocals and deep synth pads to conjure a downy, freeform zone. It’s some of the most approachable work to emerge from the greater 3XL universe yet, tugging at a latent pop sensibility first revealed by hoodie’s early post-rock and emo-influenced releases.”

A downtempo tour de force reminiscent of Bjork, ‘Scorpio‘ is the absolute pinnacle of this release, thanks to trip-hop drum work, processed guitar and the deepest of dub bass lines. James K’s heartfelt lyrics, which are also extremely catchy, enhances the shimmer and whimsical nature of the track. On the flip, ‘Ether‘ forges a much deeper sound-field thanks to extended vocals and abstracted ambiance.

Catherine Moan – Jawbreaker

“In her latest single, “Jawbreaker,” Catherine Moan (née Angel Jefferson) evokes the brooding vibes of early Depeche Mode and the ethereal echoes of Strawberry Switchblade’s Rose McDowall, with a splash of Cyndi Lauper for good measure. The song surges with an undercurrent of dark energy – its bass is relentless, while the vocals oscillate between stark luminance and haunting depths. Building with a surreal tension, it reaches a climactic release of shimmering synths and experimental drum beats.”

Via Post-punk.Com

“From the candy to the punk band to a criminally slept-on teen movie from the ’90s, a “Jawbreaker” can mean many things to many people. But from this day (August 17) forward, it now has the sweetest meaning of them all: A delectable synth-pop pinwheel of a tune from Catherine Moan, the latest in the Philadelphia project’s candy-land production line of sugary sweet electronic-pop that’s easy to digest and hard to pass up. “

  1. Absolutely mate. I cannot link to every blog I read so I am hoping that in some small way this approach more than makes up for it!
