Five years after volume 2, we finally get a new Strawberry Punks compilation, which is a series that showcases Indonesian indiepop past and present.
Opener Catch Up was originally found on the now defunct twee pop duo Sex Sux’s 2010 Cat Soup EP. It’s good to hear it, and it’s post-punk indiepop charms once more. Given that their last single on Bandcamp was back in 2018 I am not sure if the Maxillary offering is a new or previously unheard track. I hope it’s the latter, although to be fair the former will do too, as the Shop Assistants inspired Family Ties is wonderful.
Egofatum are a new name to these ears and their track She’s A Girl With A Tattoo is, as the label themselves point out, very reminiscent of The Sensitive’s work. With a bit of Another Sunny Day thrown in too! Apple Club is another new name and their fuzzy, lo-fi offering Wish is a blast. I cannot wait to hear more.
Finally, given that their name is Twisterella and not to be confused with other bands with the same name, you may have some idea how the demo of Morning Blue sounds. But it’s not a carbon copy. The vocals are distinctive, giving the song bite. It gets more indie rock than indie pop, but it’s a fitting closing track to another fine volume. I hope it’s not another five years until volume four!
Strawberry Punks Vol 3 is out now digitally via Disanorak. A cassette will follow later.
