On this release Na Grebne Volny turn into a full-on surf pop band with two instrumental tracks that make the listener think of the beaches of Southern California rather than the colder climate of Pereslavl-Zalessky which is where the band are from. I am still unsure what the band’s name in English. Is it still On the Crest of a Wave or now as Google is suggesting Point Break? To be honest I don’t care because what I do know is that this is another fine EP full of well crafted indiepop songs. It’s the lovely female ethereal vocals (think Flowers Rachel Kenedy) that are going to hit home first before the guitars and percussion grab your attention. This Russian band’s name in English, as google translate assures me, is At The Crest Of The Wave and I guess the artwork confirms that! What we have here are four excellent 1960’s influenced twee/indiepop tracks woven with some fine rock and roll guitar in the style of Duanne Eddy – yes it works! And the singer’s voice is beautiful none more so than on Вода (Water). I was going to compare them to say The Yearning but they are already distinct enough to not warrant that. Give them a listen.
