Various DIY Artists – Nobody’s Business

Nobody’s Business is the debut release from the people (well person) who brings you the Candy Twist Fanzine. It features a number of bands mentioned on these very pages (Fireworks, Martha, Lost tapes, Colour Me Wednesday etc etc) as well as a welcome return for the likes of Liechtenstein and Horowitz. I have been streaming this to death of late and as there are only going to be 250 copies (12″ vinyl) I had better get my order in sharpish come payday. Pre-order it here. Pre-orders come with a free and exclusive 48 page fanzine featuring interviews with the bands … Continue reading Various DIY Artists – Nobody’s Business

Larry Jefferson – Space Missions Are Lame Now E.P & When That Day Comes EP.

Some electronica today. The new EP from Larry Jefferson reminds me of the likes of Biosphere, Pete Namlook and those ambient compilations Apollo and Positiva used to put out. Blissful stuff. Get it digitally via his bandcamp page. EDIT: It seems there is another EP out this time on 1-2-3 Recordings. It features the excellent Over The Bridge at Whitby track which I have mentioned before.. Available digitally via Beatport. Soundcloud Continue reading Larry Jefferson – Space Missions Are Lame Now E.P & When That Day Comes EP.

Girl One And The Grease Guns – (Here Come The) Catastrophe Machines

Girl One And The Grease Guns release their third 7″ of the year next week and it’s their best one yet. Titled (Here Come The) Catastrophe Machines it’s full of feedback and white noise! Metal dance indeed. It’s backed with Hitting The Brick Wall which is a lovely synth pop tune with melodies from the 1980’s. Order it from the label. Various Artists – A Sunday Matinee

Matinee Recordings celebrate their 15th year as a record label this month. As part of the celebrations they are releasing a new 15 track compilation which features new, unreleased or rare tracks from their stable of artists. Personally I am really pleased to hear the track from The Electric Pop Group after four years as I thought they were dead or something! The new track from Strawberry Whiplash is pretty fine whilst Brazil’s Pale Sunday also pack the goods too. Oh and Northern Portrait. And Bubblegum Lemonade………. You can order the CD from here. Wolfhounds – Divide and Fall

The Wofhounds, a band who featured on the C86 tape, release their second 7″ of the year on Odd Box Records at the beginning of next month. It’s also the follow up to Cheer Up which was on the same label and the limited edition 001 EP which was released on German label Vollwert Records back in June. I have yet to see them since they reformed a few years ago but it’s on my to do list especially as all year they have sounded like they have never gone away! Pre-order the single via the label’s bandcamp page. Facebook Continue reading Wolfhounds – Divide and Fall

The Fireworks – Runaround

The contenders for song of the year keep on coming. Originally sounding like a Subway Organisation tribute act (and there is definately nothing wrong with that in my view!) The Fireworks have totally expanded beyond that original pigeonhole and have now gone further musically more than I imagined they ever could after witnessing one of their first ever live shows a couple of years back. The mix between Emma’s vocals, the melodies that scream pop at ya and the fuzzy guitars are simply sublime. Simply put I love this! It’s on on 7″ and mp3 via Shelflife Records. Pre-order here. … Continue reading The Fireworks – Runaround

The Salient Braves – Somewhere Sordid EP

The title and lead track on this EP will more than likely to be in my top 10 tracks of the year. Hell the rest of the EP is pretty fine too. It certainly is one of the strongest releases musically I have heard in 2013 coupled with intelligent and witty writing. There is even a decent cover of The Kinks Waterloo Sunset which may give you an idea behind some of main man Matt Bailey’s songwriting influences. The label describes them as post C86 but I hear a bit of pre C86 in there too – post C81 then … Continue reading The Salient Braves – Somewhere Sordid EP
