The Electric Mainline / Soundwire (Split 7inch)

Not yet seven days into 2014 and the label behind this forthcoming release reckons you will not hear a better 7″ single this year. The Electric Mainline are all psych noise and shoegaze mixed together whilst Soundwire go one step further and add krautrock into the mix. It’s a great combination but best 7″ of the year? Whilst I am not sure about that it certainly sets a benchmark for the next 12 months. Pre-order it here. http://soundcloud.com/northernstarrecords/all-too-much http://soundcloud.com/northernstarrecords/a-little-death-soundwire Electric Mainline Soundwire Northern Star Records Continue reading The Electric Mainline / Soundwire (Split 7inch)

The Wolfhounds – Anthem

The second post of 2014, like the first, features a release on Oddbox Records. This time it’s the third 7″ single in a year for the label from C86 survivors The Wolfhounds. It’s a double A side featuring Anthem and Middle Aged Freak. Only the former is available for streaming at present and whilst not as catchy as the previous two singles the jagged guitars, Dave Callahan’s deadpan vocals and the crescendo of noise means it soon grows on you pretty sharpish. The band have also been confirmed as playing at this years Northern Star Weekender which takes place at … Continue reading The Wolfhounds – Anthem

Records I Like – Songs of 2013 (Part Two 1 – 5)

It’s time for Part two of what has grabbed my ears more than most in 2013 and given this blog has now been going for a year this list is pretty apt! Both The Fireworks and Zipper produce joyous pop moments which remind me why I love indiepop in the first place. Girl One and The Grease Guns have been a revelation and a fourth single in less than a year is due soon. Political indiepop is on the wane but thankfully the likes of The Occasional Flickers remember how it’s done. Finally I not really a great fan of … Continue reading Records I Like – Songs of 2013 (Part Two 1 – 5)

Matinee Hit Parade 2013

Matinee has released a stash of stuff recently which I have not had the time to write about including the new album from Bubblegum Lemonade and a new Northern Portrait compilation amongst others. If, like me, you need to catch up on the label’s activities Matinee have put together a soundcloud playlist entitled 2013 hit parade featuring forty tracks that have featured on releases this year. For those who prefer Spotify I have created a version in that too. Homepage Continue reading Matinee Hit Parade 2013

Songs of 2013 – Your Choices

I have always enjoyed reading other peoples end of year lists such as Not Unloved and Trip TV for instance both of which feature choices new to me. I guess that’s why I like lists so much plus it’s also an easy way to generate another Spotify playlist! Anyway to prove that some people may actually read (or glance) at this blog what were your favourite tracks of 2013? Let me know in the comments. Image from here. Records I Like – Songs of 2013 (Part One 10 – 6)

It’s that time of year again and I thought I would try and list my 10 favourite tracks of 2013. Y’ know the ones that are on constant repeat or the ones that stick in the brain whether it’s due to the vocals, melodies, political content or that they just scream pop at ya. There have been a number that did not make this list but just rummage through the blog to find others that have impressed me greatly. You may like them too. Or not as the case maybe but that is what Records I like is about. Anyway … Continue reading Records I Like – Songs of 2013 (Part One 10 – 6)
