Echo Signal – Call Down The Light

The Echo Signal are a post punk band from Minneapolis whose music errs on the dark side of that genre. Think lots of goth bands and a lot of Joy Division. This is a strong EP if that is your sort of thing. It certainly is mine! Whilst the band are musically and lyrically sound I reckon the droning vocals are a bit like marmite – you will either love or hate them. The singer sounds like a cross between Peter Murphy and Ian Curtis which is no surprise given the bands influences. He especially sounds like the latter on … Continue reading Echo Signal – Call Down The Light

Factice factory – !NADA!

Just imagine post punk bands on Mute such as The Normal if they were around today. Or Belgian minimal acts such as The Names being remixed 35 plus years later. If you can then you may get an idea of how French/Swiss act Factice Factory sound. Two excellent slabs of synth pop harking back to the post punk era taken from the forthcoming album !Nada!. They are currently available as a free download from the band’s bandcamp page. Facebook Continue reading Factice factory – !NADA!

Sans Néant – Astral / Leaves / Behind

Excellent stuff from Finland. Experimental meets shoegaze, indiepop and noisepop amongst others . There is plenty of stuff on the bandcamp page to download for nowt but this latest release is the best work so far especially on opening track Astrals (Collide) which sounds like a mashup between The Jesus and Mary Chain and My Bloody Valentine. Final track Uphill Shadows is also worth a listen venturing into Aphex Twin territory circa the Richard D. James album period. Nice! Continue reading Sans Néant – Astral / Leaves / Behind

Lights That Change – Voices

I have not had that much chance to listen to music these past couple of weeks for various reasons but I have got a week off now and I will use some of that in order to catch up on the backlog of bandcamp and soundcloud bookmarks I have amassed. Voices by Lights That Change is the first bookmark crossed off from that list. Again they are another band on Ear To Ear Records a label that has taken much of my scant listening time this pass month. I have read a number of comments from people saying they sound … Continue reading Lights That Change – Voices

Hard Left – We Are Hard Left

Given the depressing recent election result here in the UK, where we need to get back to a socialist labour party and not one that panders to the middle classes, petty nationalism and the Murdoch press, the timing of this album could not be more apt. That Petrol Emotion once sang “educate, antagonise, organise” and hopefully this album can be part of that rallying cry. I don’t do reviews anymore but if I did they would be like this. It’s out now as a 45rpm vinyl album via Future Perfect Records. Order it from here (US). Those in the UK … Continue reading Hard Left – We Are Hard Left
