The Gory Alices – Swimsuit Aliens

The Gory Alices describes themselves as “a horror punk and surf rock band”. Despite only forming earlier this year Swimsuit Aliens is their second EP and leads on from their debut, the 21st Century Cosmic Freak Show EP. Their music is, and you will not be surprised given their description, is a mix of rock ‘n’ roll, garage, punk inspired riffs and comic humour. The strongest instrument though is the voice of Gory Alice herself whose strong vocals bring the stories being told in the songs to life and you can let your imagination run riot as she belts the … Continue reading The Gory Alices – Swimsuit Aliens

Special Friend – Low Tide

Low Tide is taken from the forthcoming self titled EP from Special Friend. It’s a mix of garage and indie rock which already makes it mark just as the psych influenced guitars start to make some noise. There is another track, Before, also available for streaming which merges garage and 1960’s influenced indiepop together for maximum effect. I cannot wait to give the whole EP a listen when it is released but for now these two tracks will do quite nicely for now. Special Friend will be released on Howlin’ Banana records on 10″ vinyl and digital formats at the … Continue reading Special Friend – Low Tide

eGGs – eGGs

eGGs are a Parisian indiepop four piece and this is their second release, with the same name, also on Howlin Banana Records! There are two tracks. The first A Certain Smile has more hooks than a fishing competition, mixing indie pop with psychedelia and then some. The chorus, as with the vocals throughout, is/are addictive listening. The second song, Picture Book, has a swirling organ sound with a 1960s garage pop feel. Close your eyes and you can imagine a kaleidoscope of colours to accompany the music. Er just me then! These are two excellent songs that deserved to be … Continue reading eGGs – eGGs

Swim Team – Everyday Things

Earlier this year former Stone Rose frontman Ian Brown morphed into Primal Scream on his comeback single First World Problems. On their new song Melbourne’s Swim Team sing about the same subject but deliver it in a slyly humorous way. They don’t morph into anyone other than themselves on this garage inspired jangle pop tune that will bring a wry smile to the listeners face. Get un-Loaded with this fun, none too serious, pop tune! Continue reading Swim Team – Everyday Things

Melenas – Ya No Me Importa/Si Tú Me Quieres

I am not sure where Pamplona’s Melenas have been hiding for the last 18 months but it’s good to hear them back again on this double a-side single. It features two lovely slices of 1960s inspired garage pop complete with fuzzy guitars and girl band vocals. It’s available on 7″ vinyl and digital formats direct from the band. Facebook Continue reading Melenas – Ya No Me Importa/Si Tú Me Quieres

Tight Knit – Too Hot

Originally released digitally in 2017 Too Hot, and flip side Want You, by Melbourne’s Tight Knit now get the vinyl treatment they deserve courtesy of Glasgow’s Not Unloved Records. Too Hot is a garage/indiepop hybrid with more than a few nods in the direction of riot grrrl whilst I Want You has a catchy chorus that you could die for. Order the 7″ here. The original digital versions are still available on a pay what you want basis from the band. Facebook Continue reading Tight Knit – Too Hot

The Wendy Darlings – Always Late

Always Late is taken from the forthcoming album The Wendy Darlings Against Evil that will be released on Oddbox Records in May of this year. It is a short, shouty garage number that has me questioning myself asking have The Wendy Darlings always been this loud? I will reserve judgement for when the album is released but in the meantime crank up that volume and press play. Facebook Continue reading The Wendy Darlings – Always Late

The Hermits – Ruby Red Summer

Ruby Red Summer was originally released back in 2017 on the band’s tour tape and is now going to be released as part of the band’s debut album. It’s a track that transcends boundaries and mixes indiepop, garage and krautrock which is a far better selection than the Pick N’ Mix at your local store. The self titled debut album is released next month on Austin Town Hall Records. Pre-order it from here. Faceboook Continue reading The Hermits – Ruby Red Summer

Bobkat’65 – Four Times a Fool / Pain Everynight

Bobkat’65 are a Spanish trio obsessed by all things American 1960’s Teen Beat/Garage and you would be hard not to believe it when presented with the evidence here (hear?)! Two slices of very cool and retro sounding girl band influenced music that should be on at least one of your mixtapes. It’s enough for me to start exploring their back catalogue pronto. A new album follows later this year but in the mean time these two tracks are out now on Get Hip Recordings Facebook Continue reading Bobkat’65 – Four Times a Fool / Pain Everynight
