Choir Division – At The Opera

The Hamburg Opera Chorsaal describe themselves as probably the world’s first and one and only choir to worship the music of Joy Division and New Order. There are some pretty dire cover versions of both bands to be found on Bandcamp but thankfully these recordings are not amongst them. The arrangements and the voices do these songs justice and it’s amazing how well they fit in a choral setting especially on Passover. Available on a pay what you want basis from Bandcamp! They also cover Atmosphere and provide us with a remixed version which works just as well, if not … Continue reading Choir Division – At The Opera

Something For The Weekend? Three From Russia

Here are three bands from Russia that have caught my ear recently. Июльские Дни – Колокол Google translates the band and song name as Bell by the July Days and it’s an impressive EP that romps through guitar orientated post-punk territory with unabashed abandon. The highlight for me is the powerful sounding Крутится-вертится (Spinning, Spinning). Буерак – Влюбленный Альфонс Translated as Love Alphonse by Buerak I like this as it gives post-punk a fresh lick of paint. Very catchy and with a punchy vocal style. I am already checking out their previous work. промзона 96 – гордость The band actually … Continue reading Something For The Weekend? Three From Russia

Pinkshinyultrablast – The Cherry Pit

The Cherry Pit is the second single taken from the new album Grandfeathered which is due out in February 2016 on Club AC30. Once again the vocals of singer Lyubov Soloveva shine above the the winning experimental mix of frantic, shoegaze inspired guitar feedback and synthesised, digital beats. And I haven’t even mentioned the mosh pit finish! The Cherry Pit will be available on 7″ vinyl and digital formats. Pre-order it from here. You can also pre-order Grandfeathered here. Facebook Continue reading Pinkshinyultrablast – The Cherry Pit

Pinkshinyultrablast – Kiddy Pool Dreams

Spanking new single from Russian experimental shoegazers Pinkshinyultrablast. It’s backed with a version on the flip and is out on Club AC30 on October 2nd. Sadly the limited edition vinyl has sold out but you will be able to get it in digital formats via the usual places. The band start their UK tour tomorrow (Friday 25th Sept)  and I can vouch that they are well worth catching. Facebook Continue reading Pinkshinyultrablast – Kiddy Pool Dreams

Holiday Tuneage!

It’s going to be a bit silent around here for the next couple of weeks whilst I am away but that doesn’t mean that there will be nothing left to listen too judging by this round up post which features some music I have meaning to mention separately but time etc. First up is The Death of Pop with their new single Bubble Bath that features four excellent indie pop tracks. Not much progression from their previous work but if it ain’t broke………………. The excellent The Choo Choo Trains, who describe themselves as playing “girl-guide Shoegaze”, have a new cassette … Continue reading Holiday Tuneage!

Girl One and The Grease Guns – The Shatterproof Man

Girl One and The Grease Guns have released their seventh and final 7″ single via Squirrel Records (who also are sadly shutting down). The band may well release music in the future but not in 7″ vinyl format. As for this release The Shatterproof Man carries on in the same vein as previous singles being an energetic and elaborate electronic based pop song which deserves to be kept spinning. The flip side A Steel Cat In A Glass Jar is a different kettle of fish entirely being an experimental track sounding like a mix between industrial music and a film … Continue reading Girl One and The Grease Guns – The Shatterproof Man

Sans Néant – Astral / Leaves / Behind

Excellent stuff from Finland. Experimental meets shoegaze, indiepop and noisepop amongst others . There is plenty of stuff on the bandcamp page to download for nowt but this latest release is the best work so far especially on opening track Astrals (Collide) which sounds like a mashup between The Jesus and Mary Chain and My Bloody Valentine. Final track Uphill Shadows is also worth a listen venturing into Aphex Twin territory circa the Richard D. James album period. Nice! Continue reading Sans Néant – Astral / Leaves / Behind

Tape Runs Out – Friends / Flowers

Experimental meets shoegaze meets pop. Or something like that. Friends finishes far too quickly for my liking whilst Flowers takes a few listens as it slowly grows on you. An interesting first release from this Cambridge based band. It’s out as a digital single via Ear To Ear Records. Get it from here. An album (with a new line up) follows later this year.
