Night Flowers – Sleep

Night Flowers return with both a new vocalist and single. Sleep is at the poppier end of the shoegazing barometer and new singer Sophia Pettit’s voice is used to great effect alongside the shimmering guitars. Flip side Sitting Pretty sees the band still sounding like an early Pains of Being Pure At Heart but, hey, that is no bad thing. Lowtide – Julia​/​Spring

The latest single from Melbourne dreampoppers Lowtide is a cover of Julia by French post punk band Asylum Party. It’s a cracking cover with the shimmering guitars and joyous joint vocals really doing the original justice. However it’s the flip side Spring that deserves the plaudits here as it develops into a track of anthem like proportions that will have your feet tapping and your head nodding in unison such is it’s pull. Star Horse – Slower Now (Remixes)

I mentioned Star Horse and their excellent Slower Now single last month. It’s now had the remix treatment courtesy of Thunberg and LTZA. Both mixes concentrate on the vocals which stood out on the original and highlight them to great effect. The former is upbeat, almost dancey in places but it’s the latter remix I prefer which drifts in and out of ambient/film score territory resulting in a dreamy and atmospheric feel.  Neither are better than the original though so give that a listen first. Star Horse – Slower Now/Wherever You

Nice melodic shoegaze from Sweden that draws comparisons from The Cocteau Twins to Slowdive. There is a lot of this about at present but rather than being a pale imitation Star Horse take these influences and turn them into something lovely especially on Slower Now with singer/guitarist Maja’s vocals standing out.
