Guatemala is the first I have heard from self styled “twee-punk” band Amanda X since their debut Ruin The Moment EP. It’s taken from the band’s debut album Amnesia due for release later this month on Slitbreeze Records. It’s a pretty good track and hopefully a good pointer to the album. Any record featuring female vocals and fuzzy guitars is going to be a winner in my book and the debut EP from Gingerlys is no exception especially on Summer Cramps which could develop into a terrace chant. Univers hail from Barcelona and on their debut album L’Estat Natural they initially suggest to me that they are a Catalan version of a Sea Monsters era Wedding Present. However subsequent listens suggest they are poppier than that with more than a state side slant. The sulky vocals, crashing guitars and the pulsating drive in each song more than make up for the fact that, unless you speak Catalan, you have no idea what they are singing about.
