Regular followers of these pages may have gathered the impression that I am a big fan of fuzzy and sometimes shambolic indiepop sounds reminiscent of my youth. You would be right!
One of my favourite purveyors of such a sound is the Indonesian act Crayon Cats. Over the weekend there was news that the South African based label Subjangle are releasing a compilation of their recordings to date including the recent Songs About You #2 EP.
As you may have suspected I have reviewed these releases previously:
“I hear so much of The Rosehips, The Charlottes, Bubblegum Splash and The Flatmates on these tracks it’s uncanny. The guitars are fuzzy whilst the female vocals are dainty and shouty at the same time. For an ol’ chap like me this EP, and the best debut EP I have heard this year, is sheer joy. Press repeat play then go Surfin’ in the Subway!”
“Cloud Over You is not as immediately in your face as the songs found on the recent Songs About You! EP. However it’s mellow indiepop charms, resplendent with the wistful female vocals, soon win me over especially with the guitars towards the songs end. C86 chill out anybody?”

“On October Girlfriend Crayon Cats make a somewhat shambling sound akin to The Rosehips being crossed with Talulah Gosh which results in a high score on the fuzziness monitor.”
“I have more than gushed about Jakarta’s Crayon Cats on these pages over the past months. Their sound resonates with my youth, Think fanzines, the Subway Organisation, Lazy Records, The Shop Assistants, 53rd & 3rd and flexi discs etc.”
It’s a nice handy capsule indeed! Pre-Order Songs About You 1 & 2 from the Subjangle Bandcamp Page.
