Glitter On The Mattress – Love Songs

Glitter On The Mattress is a Gateshead based act and seems to be the pseudonym of one Esmé Newman – that Shop Assistants reference will be come clear in a mo’. Love Songs is the second EP released in as many months and features four fuzzy pop DIY songs that mix the spirit of C86 with the brashness of Riot Grrrl.

The tracks here remind me of the female fronted bands coming out in Glasgow and Edinburgh in the early/mid 1980’s. Think Fizzbombs, Baby Lemonade and of course The Shop Assistants.

Indeed Newman writes that the opening track Bitch Me Out “is obviously a bit of a Shop Assistants rip off isn’t it”. It certainly is and that is no bad thing in my book. I could listen to it all day long (I will get me coat!).

Love Songs is available on a pay what you want basis from Bandcamp.
