Continuing the series of posting albums and/or EPs as and when they are released (or usually a bit after!) as a follow-up to the initial new tracks/singles posted on this blog. Sample the release via the YouTube track (s) then dive in to the full release.
Grrrl Gang – Spunky
(Spunky) “The indiepop undercurrent is still in the background, but here they sound louder, rockier and a damn sight punkier. I think I need to hear the whole album to understand the context but on its own, as a standalone single, it’s a nice short blast of noise pop”
“Rude Awakening is the second single to be taken from the forthcoming album Spunky!, that is much more accessible than the previous single and title track. Whilst the sound presents a much more mature edge, it also contains hints of the band’s playful and poppier past. ”
Spunky! is out now via Trapped Animal Records (UK), Kill Rock Stars (US) and Big Romantic Records (JP).
Reviews at Joyzine – Tinnitist – Ink 19
Melenas – Ahora
(Bang) “Opening with some delicious synths, with a nod to Neu’s Hallagallo, the song morphs into an electropop track with plenty of reverb pasted all over. Catchy and addictive.”
Ahora is out now via Trouble In Mind Records.
Beach Vacation – Coping Habits
“Lay Low is another one of those jangling tracks that Beach Vacation do so well by linking up influences derived from both 1960s surf pop and 1980s inspired indiepop.”
“Blurred Out is taken from Beach Vacation’s forthcoming new album Coping Habits that will be released on September 15th 2023. It features Cathedral Bells, a band who have slipped my mind recently but one who I will reinvestigate based on their collaboration here. It’s great, by the way!”
Coping Habits is out now via Start-Track (cassette), Daydream (vinyl) and Too Good To Be True (CD).
