Radiosonic, aka Polish born and now London based Robert Gula, released his Love Embargo EP back in August 2021. Alongside two original tracks was his cover of Joy Division’s Atmosphere. I missed it at the time, so why mention it now? Well a video for the song, which has been christened as Ian Curtis’ Epilepsy Dance All Moves Gathered And Reimagined, has just been released. Gula writes:
“The concept for this came to me right after I finished recording my rendition of Atmosphere, but as far as I can recall, I’ve always been drawn to Ian’s moves. They appear out of this world to me, which is good. What if I could find all of Ian’s dancing videos, compile them, and even attempt to improve or reinvent them? I asked Natalie Dinges because I needed a really skilled dancer. She is a superb actress, performer, and choreographer. She quickly replied ‘yes’, but the first thing she ever questioned was how I could be Ian Curtis with my long hair. Fuck it! We gotta cut it all! And that’s how it all started. As we started filming, Natalie’s hair remained uncut; however, after shaving off half of it, we continued until there was no more hair left on her head. Natalie put a lot of effort into being ready for this task, and she masterfully conjures up a memory of Ian.”
The cover itself is pretty strong, but the video takes it further. It’s thought provoking and full of emotion, resulting in a powerful and unsettling experience.
