I have been featuring a lot of female fronted dreampop recently, especially bands with a vocalist who give an ethereal feel to the songs. One band who I have been constantly reminded of has been The Cranes, mainly because of the gothic tinged vocals of singer Alison Shaw. The band, who originally formed in 1985, are still going and their Inescapable EP and Wings Of Joy album are still regulars on my playlist.
The band have recently announced that they are releasing an album of their John Peel Sessions from 1989 and 1990 which covers the time period of the aforementioned releases. Take a step back in time and decide for yourself whether the Cranes, especially that voice, are a direct or indirect influence – or it’s just plain coincidental!
Peel Sessions 1989-1990 will be released on 02 June 2023 in vinyl and digital formats. You can pre-order it from here.
