Ryan Marquez is channelling his inner Creation Records on the latest release from The Umbrella Puzzles. More specifically The Loft seem to be a major influence to the sound found on the On The Meadow EP none more so on That’s Where I’ll Go which reminds me of Why Does The Rain in more ways than one. The lyrics also give the EP it’s name too – a very The Loft thing to do.
But no, this is not a note for note replication given Marquez’s own musical pedigree. He effortlessly plucks melodies from his guitars resplendent with some lo-fi jangles and programmed beats. On the excellent Get What You Want he is joined by Evan Seurkamp (The Laughing Chimes) who provides some delectable 12-string guitar chords. If you haven’t been nodding along and/or foot tapping by the time the closer When The Morning Reappears finishes I would say you are extinct as a Dodo.
On The Meadow is a fine retro sounding EP and is out now via Subjangle. You had better hurry as there are not many of the limited edition CDs left.
