Okay, I admit that it was the title of this release that grabbed my attention when scouring through Bandcamp recently. I am glad I gave it a listen because South West Londoner Neil Avery has produced a fine indiepop EP that incorporate his influences and then some.
The EP opens in style with the retro, C86 sounding You Let Me Down Again jangling it’s way into the listeners affections. Brilliant Through And Through is a tribute to the late Dave Goldsworthy and The Chesterfields as Avery sings about being down in the mosh pit at one of their gigs and then getting to speak to his hero afterwards. That’s How I See You opens with a trumpet blast as the song opens and the brass continues throughout backed up with some lovely female vocals. Time On My Hands is different altogether being a piano-based ballad that hints at The Smiths. The lyrics are suitably melancholic whilst a beautiful cello arrangement makes the song complete.
Follow You Around starts off like later Orange Juice before turning onto a full-on indie dance floor stomper with more than a hint of Screamadelica era Primal Scream. Again the backing vocals are cracking and, if truth be told, they make the song. Inigo, with its witty lyrics, merges indiepop and Britpop whilst final track In The End sounds like the dreaded ukulele has made an appearance but thankfully the lovely words more than make up for it.
A cracking and diverse EP. It’s another win for British toilet humour and quality indiepop!
