Or as the label, Pow! Pop Kids, kindly translates Noise-pop for Beginners by Buddy Psycholly.
It’s more than simply noise pop though and a lot of it is very clever indie and jangle pop that’s packed with ideas. There are plenty of rock ‘n’ roll hooks for one. Opener Молодость и красота (Youth and Beauty) starts off like Tommy Roe’s Sheila before turning into an indiepop dancefloor staple. It continues on Беги (Run) which could be the sound of the forbidden Soviet rock ‘n’ roll underground.
There is also surf pop in the shape of the band’s cover of The Surfari’s Wipe Out (Вайпаут). They even cover The Ramones Now I Wanna Sniff Some Glue (Вот пакет, а вот и клей). As good as they are there is really no need for the cover versions. The band’s own material stands out and it’s utterly beguiling stuff. Tracks like Призраки любви (Ghosts of Love) and Да! (Yes!) captivate the listener and if there is a better closing track this year than Обмани меня (Trick Me) then I want to hear it.
Noise-pop for Beginners is one of the best releases of 2019 to date as March draws to a close. It’s available on cassette and digital formats from Pow! Pop Kids. Recommended.
