The Fireworks – Dream About You

The Fireworks release their new single Dream About You next week. It’s also their first material with new vocalist Beth Arzy (Trembling Blue Stars/Lightning in a Twilight Hour/The Luxembourg Signal). Thankfully the change of singer does not affect the band’s brand of fuzzy, sometimes noisy, indie pop. All three tracks here are corkers but it’s Better Without You Now that stands out for me especially given its retro sound and the joint girl/boy vocals shining throughout. It wouldn’t sound out of place on one of Cherry Red’s recent eighties indie-pop compilations. Get it! It’s available on 7″ from Opposite Number … Continue reading The Fireworks – Dream About You

The Fireworks – All The Time

All The Time is taken from The Fireworks new EP entitled Black and Blue. It’s a 1980’s inspired fuzzy indiepop track which is catchy, addictive and most importantly, as demonstrated by the video, FUN! The rest of the EP mixes up the indiepop template a fair bit and if you are a fan of C86 and it’s ilk you will love it. The EP is out now on 10″ vinyl via Shelflife Records or if you are still in the EU it’s best to pick it up from the band’s bandcamp page or Rough Trade. The Fireworks – Switch Me On

It’s been out for a couple of weeks now and it’s a cracker setting the benchmark for all other album releases this year. From opener With My Heart via the brilliant single Runaround to the closing track it’s a glorious way to spend 37 and a bit minutes. That means I get to play it twice on my journey into work! Get it from Rough Trade (UK) or Shelflife Records (US) Photo by Pierre Delpino taken at the bands recent launch show at Rough Trade East. The Fireworks – On and On

On and On is taken from the Fireworks forthcoming debut album Switch Me On which is due for release in February 2015 on Shelflife Records. On and On is noisy, frantic and clocks in under two minutes. Think The Buzzcocks meeting up with The Shop Assistants. Now that’s the perfect pop recipe for me. On and On is available digitally from here. You can pre-order Switch Me On in blood red vinyl as well as CD from the label (US) or you can order the CD version via the band or vinyl via Rough Trade (UK/EU). The Fireworks – I Wish You’d Go

Forget the nonsense that is the 76 track (yes 76 tracks!) reissue of the C86 cassette Cherry Red will be releasing later this year. If you buy one compilation in 2014 make sure it’s Nobody’s Business released by the fledgling Dutch label Candy Twist Records. I have been streaming this album for weeks now since I first mentioned it and now this beauty has been signed, sealed and delivered alongside the latest issue of the fanzine. I Wish You’d Go by the Fireworks is the opening track and it sets the tone for the whole album. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zzRC22dw6yQ Stream here Buy … Continue reading The Fireworks – I Wish You’d Go

The Fireworks – Runaround

The contenders for song of the year keep on coming. Originally sounding like a Subway Organisation tribute act (and there is definately nothing wrong with that in my view!) The Fireworks have totally expanded beyond that original pigeonhole and have now gone further musically more than I imagined they ever could after witnessing one of their first ever live shows a couple of years back. The mix between Emma’s vocals, the melodies that scream pop at ya and the fuzzy guitars are simply sublime. Simply put I love this! It’s on on 7″ and mp3 via Shelflife Records. Pre-order here. … Continue reading The Fireworks – Runaround

The Fireworks – Higher and Higher

I have mentioned The Fireworks debut self titled EP previously. They have now released a video for the lead track “Higher and Higher”. They also have a change of drummer. Carys has rejoined the reformed (or should that be revitalised?) Give It Ups and has been replaced by Shaun Charman who used to play in The Wedding Present and The Popguns. The EP can be purchased via the label. Homepage Continue reading The Fireworks – Higher and Higher
