Port Sulphur – Blow City

The new Port Sulphur digital single features the likes of James Kirk (Orange Juice) and Davy Henderson (The Fire Engines/Win). Indeed the band is the project of Henderson’s fellow Nectarine No 9 and Sexual Objects stalwart Douglas MacIntyre who also happens to be the owner of the Creeping Bent label. Back to the song itself which is a predominately guitar driven instrumental until the vocals finally fade in towards the tracks climax. It’s effective stuff. Port Sulphur feat. James Kirk – Orient Express

On their last release Port Sulphur enlisted Davy Henderson (Fire Engines, Win plus more!) and Vic Godard (Subway Sect). On this release they are joined by James Kirk, once of Orange Juice, who co-wrote the track, plays guitars and sings. He is joined by Ken McCluskey (The Bluebells) who plays harmonica to great effect. It’s a brilliant song that harks back to the golden age of Scottish post-punk in a triumphant manner. The oriental sounding guitars and the Kirk’s vocals draw the listener straight in. Everything else is a bonus. Three releases that are on my “must write about that” list… Port Sulphur – The Lane Featuring Davy Henderson and Vic Godard. No words can express how great this so I guess that’s why I have avoided writing in detail about it. Just listen! Cayetana – Camp Cope Two tracks from the rapidly improving to these ears Cayetana. Mesa is catchy alt-rock whilst Trails is slower paced which shows off the band’s excellent songwriting.
