I have more than gushed about Jakarta’s Crayon Cats on these pages over the past months. Their sound resonates with my youth, Think fanzines, the Subway Organisation, Lazy Records, The Shop Assistants, 53rd & 3rd and flexi discs etc.
The brand new Songs About You! #2 EP is no exception to the and I could be in my late teens again. Songs such as October Girlfriend, My Dear Boy, Dumb and It’s a Love Story Willy Nilly certainly take their cue from those times thanks to their fuzziness and shambling charms.
That said there are two tracks here that diverge from that path. Old Magazine hints at a Split era Lush whilst Hospital Hopper reminds me of the South Korean act Say Sue Me’s refined dreampop & shoegaze. I am not sure if this points at a future direction or is just a phase. For now just blast this one out loud regardless of whatever “side” of the band you prefer. Then press play again. Most good.
