Indonesian’s band Poplar Tree follow up last year’s Me vs You single with their debut EP Whisper Of Heart. It features four twee pop influenced song that are exquisite in their simplicity. The title track and My Stupid Girl are excellent retro sounding indiepop songs. Close your eyes and you could be listening to the like of Talulah Gosh and their ilk. The guitars playing out on the latter works oh so well.
On the other hand the joint “boy/girl” male vocals on Spend Time and I’ve Don’t don’t work for me. I just find the that overtly strong male vocals detract from the delicate beauty of the aforementioned female ones. I would love to hear latter song without them. Still there is plenty of promise scattered through this EP and My Stupid Girl is certainly a highlight from my listening pile over the last week or so.
Whisper Of Heart is out now via Chaotic Pop Records in cassette and digital
