I was at the Otoboke Beaver gig the other week, and I was wondering what happened to their Damnably label mates Grrrl Gang. Then lo and behold we get a new single which is the title track to precede the band’s new album entitled Spunky! Not only have the band changed labels, they have also relocated from Yogyakarta to Jakarta.
But surely the sound has remained the same? Well not exactly. The indiepop undercurrent is still in the background, but here they sound louder, rockier and a damn sight punkier. I think I need to hear the whole album to understand the context but on its own, as a standalone single, it’s a nice short blast of noise pop!
